AFRICAN PRINTS AND PATTERNS REVIEW: THE LIVING METAPHORS OF HERITAGE AND IDENTITY

By Rita Okoye
It is beyond the hues.

From iconic textile shades to symbolic patterns, African fabrics are conglomerations of artwork, representing various aspects of life and spirituality.

With each colour, contemporary and traditional fashion creatives ensure that every pattern speaks a language of its own, carrying profound meaning steeped in centuries of tradition. Red, for instance, symbolises vitality and power, with a touch of energy and passion. Often associated with spirituality and royalty, white reflects a connection to the divine and the regal heritage of many African societies.

Green, with its ties to nature and fertility, is associated with growth, abundance, and prosperity. Similarly, blue, connotes protection and freedom, offering a sense of calm and safeguarding.

Deeply rooted in cultural significance, these hues reflect the emotions, traditions, and spiritual beliefs that define African heritage and tell stories of their identity and way of life.
African fabrics are more than just vibrant colours and detailed craftsmanship. They are powerful symbols, weaved together with expressions rooted in the culture of the people who create them.

Even in corporate settings, African fabrics retain their distinct vibrancy and cultural significance, effortlessly blending traditional designs with modern masterpieces. These fabrics, characterised by their bold and bright colours, radiate professionalism and class with a touch of trendiness and charm.
Taking a vantage from bold colour schemes to fabulous silhouettes, fashion collections industry experts like Ugochi Peace Okeke define what will dominate stores, streets, and runways.

The inspiration behind UniQ Luxury, a slow fashion brand, Ugochi fuses boisterous textile shades with intricate prints, unapologetically expressive and elegant for the 21st-century woman.

With each piece a reflection of Ugochi’s deep passion for finesse and individuality, her work is stimulated by Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage and the liveliness of African art.
His 2020 Regal Tune Collection, for instance, brought a sense of optimism and fun. It did not only generate fizzles, but also drew the attention of influencers, celebrities, and fashion enthusiasts, boosting sales and media exposure.

Beyond the excitement, UniQ collection serves as a source of inspiration, showcasing innovative styles and sparking new trends. It also highlights his creativity, pushing boundaries and often setting exclusive trends.

These featured looks showcase a stunning mixture of conventional African legacy and recent trends. The stylish high-waist miniskirt and see-through blouse are proof that the modern-day woman now understands what it means to be proud of her body.
As a fashion that promotes individuality and exclusivity, UniQ’s 2020 Collection is a reiteration of what Vogue describes as “The Sheer Power of Transparent Clothing”.  The jaw-dropping display of white blue and black hues is also central to the ensemble. With an undulating bold bow tie, ruffled sleeves and accented bands, for the waist and wrists, this design echoes the rich history of Ankara fabrics. This design is not only a nod to cultural aesthetics but also demonstrates the designer’s ability to reimagine traditional materials for the modern woman.
The dress is well-tailored to spotlight the model’s figure. From the precise fit at the waistband to the smoothness along the hips, the garment’s points of measure seem thoughtfully calculated, creating a streamlined silhouette that flatters the body. Ugochi couldn’t have made a more resounding statement than this petit skirt as it reveals long and gracious legs wrapped in strapped heels ―even a stiletto would have still been a great compliment.

The colour choice of vivid blue against a deep black backdrop brings a refreshing contrast that balances boldness and subtlety. The Ankara fabric, historically rooted in African culture, carries a legacy of craftsmanship and artistry. This particular design pays homage to its ancestry while the unique patterns create a sense of movement and fluidity, as if mimicking ocean waves. The wave motif on the textile suggests fluidity and motion, symbolising strength and grace, while the organza details on the sleeves with emphasis on the armhole add an ethereal flavour that hints at present and future innovations.
This outfit could hit more points if the top had a touch of orthodox creativity. For a reason, not many women like a show of skin. While this stylish outfit gives room to play around with diverse innerwear, a better approach will be opting for a longer one that covers the upper part of the body, at least to the navel, so it is appropriate for corporate events. Or it could be a case of designing a transparent shirt with an inner wear attached to it. This way, you can slay without any random thoughts of the perfect inner to match with.

Contrastively, the fabric combo of the buttoned-up shirt and flowing trousers, often referred to as “mix and match” is a gentle reminder that in the world of fashion, certain occasions call for certain outfits. And while an above-the-knee outfit looks perfect for a fashion fiesta or any other rock-and-roll event, the two fabrics are busy. The Ankara has a splash of vivid colours and the trouser gold pattern is pronounced, resulting in a clash for attention. A plain white trouser would have worked best, accentuating this multi-patterned casual apparel while serving elegance.

A striking plus for UniQ is the tightly sewn seam, with no visible fraying, ensuring durability. Even though there are seam allowances, they are minimal and effective, in maintaining the garment’s clean lines without adding any unnecessary weight.
UniQ model, on the other hand, is not left out of this comprehensive appearance, after letting her shoulder-length bone straight hair extension cascade behind the razor-edged collar. The cuts and stitching are immaculate, displaying professional attention to detail. From the tone-blend makeover to the elegant pose, this audacious design draws inspiration from both the natural world and avant-garde fashion. Unlike the divulging skirt and glassy blouse, the matching mix provides more options for footwear, ranging from boots to slip-ons, casual sneakers, loafers, heels and sandals.
While both designs hug the model’s body comfortably without restricting movement, its fitted silhouette announces femininity while the lightness of the fabric allows for fluid motion. Aside from the artistic flair that the puffed organza gave to the entire ensemble, this dress appears to hierarchise style and functionality, with its breathable fabric and easy zipper closure ensuring comfort and ease of wear.
Moreover, the absence of bulky trims on the trousers and shirt combination allows this artwork to take centre stage. Although not visible, the care labels and size tags are assumed to follow standard practices, providing essential information without detracting from the aesthetic appeal.
The overall construction speaks of a high level of craftsmanship. The garment maintains a structured form without sacrificing comfort, evident in the ease with which it falls on the wearer. The use of complementary fabrics, particularly the sheer organza, elevates the design with a modern, luxe feel.
A successful bridge between ceremonial and current fashion yet aligning with the global trend of reinterpreting cultural elements. Consider the use of organza overlay and structured sleeves and playing with texture and volume as a foreshadowing of modern trends, while the esoteric mixture of two loud prints reflects the timeless nature of Ankara and its relevance in future collections.
In a nutshell…

By incorporating African prints into your everyday wear, you are embracing more than just fashion — you are honouring a rich cultural legacy. These fabrics are not merely decorative; they are potent symbols of pride, heritage, and hope. With each colour, pattern, and design, African textiles will continue to unravel narratives of resilience, joy, and the promise of a brighter future. So, the next time you are clad in African textiles, wear them with the understanding that you carry with you a living piece of history and culture.
It’s high time you gave your wardrobe some spark and meaning.
