Critical Review of ABVee Fashion Collections in just concluded Africa Fashion Week Nigeria Runway show 2020

By Rita Okoye

The Nigeria fashion world recently gathered for a spectacular display of creativity and innovation at the much-anticipated Africa Fashion week, held at the iconic Oriental Hotel, Lagos.

This year’s event was a testament to the resilience and boundless creativity of designers who have navigated through the challenges of recent times to bring forward collections that were both reflective and forward-thinking.

At the recently concluded Fashion Runway Show, ABVee Fashion “Eco-Elegance” collection stood out for its ambitious attempt to merge high fashion with environmental responsibility.

While the collection was widely praised for its innovative use of materials and intricate designs, a closer examination reveals a mix of triumphs and areas needing improvement.
ABVee’s commitment to sustainability is commendable.

By utilising eco-friendly fabrics they not only highlighted the potential for environmentally conscious fashion but also set a high standard for other Nigerian designers.

The organic cotton, hemp, and recycled polyester used in their designs were meticulously crafted, demonstrating that sustainability need not compromise quality or aesthetics.

The intricate detailing in ABVee’s pieces showcased their exceptional craftsmanship. Their use of delicate embroidery, beadwork, and innovative fabric manipulation techniques created a visually stunning collection.

The Avant Garde design made from recycled plastic boning, which had a shimmering, almost ethereal quality, were particularly noteworthy.

The theme of “Eco-Elegance” was woven seamlessly throughout the collection. ABVee fashion’s designs were not just clothing but statements on the importance of sustainability. Their ability to tell a compelling story through their work added a layer of depth that resonated with the audience.

While the artistic merit of the collection was undeniable, several pieces seemed more suited for the runway than real life. For instance, the extravagant gown adorned with plastic boning, beads, though visually stunning, lacked practicality.

The weight and fragility of the beads made the garment cumbersome, raising questions about its wearability outside of a high-fashion context.

ABVee Fashion’s “Eco-Elegance” collection was a significant achievement in the realm of sustainable fashion. Their innovative use of materials and dedication to eco-friendly practices set a commendable example. However, the collection also highlighted some challenges, particularly in balancing artistic vision with practicality and wearability.

By addressing these areas, ABVee could elevate their future collections to not only be environmentally responsible but also more versatile and commercially viable.

In summary, “Eco-Elegance” was a bold and ambitious collection that made a strong statement about the future of sustainable fashion. It showcased ABVee’s talent and vision while also providing valuable lessons for future endeavours.

As the Nigeria fashion industry continues to evolve, designers like ABVee play a crucial role in leading the change towards a more sustainable and innovative future.
