25 years after, Lagos govt redeems house pledge to Chioma Ajunwa


Lagos State governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has announced a 3-bedroom flat at the Babatunde Raji Fashola Housing Estate, Iponri to Olympian, Chioma Ajunwa for winning the long jump gold at the 1996 Atlanta Games.
The governor made the house reward donation on Thursday at the Lagos House, Alausa.


According to him, the donation was to fulfil the 25-year pledge made by then the military administration of Brigadier Olagunsoye Oyinlola, which has been left unfilled.
Chioma Ajunwa became the first black woman to win a gold medal at the Games in the long jump, in 1996, and was then promised house as a reward by the then Lagos government. However, years down the line, she did get the reward.
Recall that Ajunwa, who is now an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) in the Nigeria Police Force, recently lamented the government’s failure to fulfil its promise in a recent interview with an online medium.
