COVID-19: Nigeria Records First Case Of Delta Variant

A verified case of SARS-CoV-2 Delta, also known as lineage B.1.617.2, has been discovered by the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

The variation was discovered in a traveller to Nigeria, according to the NCDC’s head of communications, Dr Yahya Disu, following the regular travel test required of all foreign passengers and genomic sequencing at the NCDC National Reference Laboratory in Abuja.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has identified the Delta variation as a variant of concern due to its enhanced transmissibility, according to Disu. The variation has been found in more than 90 countries, and it is anticipated to spread further.

Given the Delta variant’s high transmissibility and subsequent discovery in Nigeria, the NCDC advises all Nigerians to adhere to all public health and social measures in place.

Physical separation, frequent handwashing, and correct usage of face masks are all proven public health and social interventions that prevent infections and save lives.

The COVID-19 vaccine, according to Disu, is both safe and effective in protecting against the disease.
