NAFDAC issues public alert on contaminated batch of Sprite 50cl bottles

In a public announcement, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has raised an alarm regarding a batch of unwholesome Sprite 50cl glass bottles that have surfaced in Nigeria.

This revelation comes after a consumer complaint prompted an investigation by NAFDAC’s post-marketing surveillance unit.

Upon further examination, it was discovered that over five crates of the identified batch of Sprite 50cl glass bottles were contaminated with particles.

As a result, NAFDAC has swiftly taken action by sampling the affected batch for laboratory analysis in their own facility.

The Agency has also instructed all zonal directors and state coordinators to conduct surveillance and eliminate the implicated batch from circulation.

To delve deeper into the issue and determine the root cause of the contamination, NAFDAC will be conducting a comprehensive current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) inspection of the manufacturing site.

This measure will ensure that proper compliance with marketing authorization is upheld and future incidents are prevented.

In response to the findings, Nigerian Bottling Company Limited (Abuja plant), the manufacturer of Sprite 50cl glass bottles, has been directed by NAFDAC to initiate a recall of the affected batch and cooperate with NAFDAC for effective monitoring throughout the process.

The batch number is AZ6 22:32 with manufacturing date, 180423 and an expiration date; 180424.

NAFDAC urgently advises distributors, retailers, and consumers to exercise caution and remain vigilant, refraining from the consumption, sale, or distribution of the implicated batch.

It is crucial to carefully inspect the authenticity and physical condition of the product before engaging with it.

Individuals in possession of the aforementioned batch of Sprite 50cl glass bottles are strongly urged to submit their stock to the nearest NAFDAC office.

If anyone has consumed this product or experienced any adverse reactions following its consumption, immediate medical advice from a qualified healthcare professional should be sought.

NAFDAC further encouraged members of the public to report any suspicions regarding the distribution and sale of unwholesome packaged food products to the nearest NAFDAC office or by contacting NAFDAC directly via phone at 0800-162-3322 or email at sf.alert@nafdac.gov.ng.

Additionally, consumers are encouraged to report any adverse events or side effects associated with the consumption of unwholesome packaged food products to the nearest NAFDAC office.

Reports can also be submitted through the E-reporting platforms available on the NAFDAC website (www.nafdac.gov.ng) or via the Med-safety application downloadable from Android and IOS stores. Email submissions can be sent to pharmacovigilance@nafdac.gov.ng.
