The momentous event unfolded with the mayor affectionately kissing the reptile, whose snout was gently secured shut.
Nicknamed ‘little princess’, the seven-year-old crocodile is said to embody the essence of a deity intertwined with Mother Earth.
Her union with the local leader is said to symbolize the profound connection between humanity and the divine, marking a sacred merging of realms.
The origins of this unique tradition trace back centuries, rooted in the indigenous communities of Chontal and Huave in Oaxaca state.
The mayor, Victor Hugo Sosa, explained, “It is the union of two cultures. The union of the Huaves and the Chontales,” underscoring the tapestry of heritage and spirituality interwoven within this sacred ceremony.
