Nigerian Architect Stephen Ajadi Wins Prestigious PhD Prize at University of Cambridge

In a remarkable achievement, Stephen Ajadi, an award-winning architect, and founder of the architecture firm RUBAN, has been honoured with the CSAR prize for outstanding PhD research at the renowned University of Cambridge.

The highly coveted award, recognizing exceptional research excellence and potential real-world impact, is considered the highest PhD prize at the prestigious institution.

Presented by the University’s Pro-Vice Chancellor, Prof Andy Neely, on June 19th, 2023, the accolade signifies the culmination of Stephen Ajadi’s groundbreaking research. His interdisciplinary spatial analysis in conflict studies has pushed the boundaries of understanding vulnerability to conflict and violence within informal spaces of the Sahel region. His findings have shed light on innovative ways to safeguard formal and informal areas in West African cities.

As Africa rapidly urbanizes, with a growing number of cities envisioned for the future, Stephen Ajadi’s research carries immense significance. By developing new approaches to assessing vulnerability and proposing strategies for urban resilience, his work paves the way for the creation of safer, more sustainable cities across the continent.

Stephen Ajadi’s dedication to research extends beyond his PhD studies. As the founding president of the Cambridge Initiative for African Urbanism at the University and the Penumbra Space NGO in Nigeria, he continues to spearhead initiatives that drive real-world impact and promote urban resilience. He is architecture firm RUBAN with offices across 4 cities in Nigeria and Uganda continues to utilize his research in the design of physical infrastructure across Africa. The Cambridge Society for the Application of Research (CSAR) has pledged its support for his future studies, recognizing his potential to shape the future of urban development in Africa.
