5 Tips for styling a bookshelf

By Jennifer Chukwujekwe

Styling a bookshelf can turn it into a beautiful focal point in your home, whether you’re going for a minimalist, eclectic, or traditional look.

Here are five tips to help you style your bookshelf effectively:

  1. Declutter and Organize:

Start by removing all items from the bookshelf and decluttering your space. Sort through your books and decorative items to decide what you want to keep and what can be donated or stored elsewhere. Group books by genre, author, colour, or size, depending on your preference. Organizing your books in a cohesive manner will create a sense of order and balance.

  1. Balance and Symmetry:

Achieve a balanced look by evenly distributing items throughout the bookshelf. Use symmetry by placing matching items on either side or balance by varying the heights and sizes of objects. This balance can be visually appealing and create a sense of harmony. For example, if you have a tall bookshelf, place taller items on one side and balance them with shorter items on the other.

  1. Mix and Match:

Combine books with decorative items such as artwork, vases, sculptures, or plants to add visual interest and personality to your bookshelf. Mix textures, colours, and materials to create a dynamic display. Consider using a variety of items, but don’t overcrowd the shelf leave some empty space to allow your display to breathe.

  1. Colour Coordination:

Arrange your books and decorative items by colour to create a visually pleasing and organized look. This method can add a pop of colour to your space and give the bookshelf a cohesive and aesthetically pleasing appearance. Keep in mind that you don’t have to colour-coordinate every single item, but arranging a few key elements by colour can be quite effective.

  1. Personalization:

Make your bookshelf uniquely yours by incorporating personal items like family photos, travel souvenirs, or heirlooms. These items can tell a story and make your bookshelf a reflection of your personality and interests. Just be mindful not to overdo it too many personal items can clutter the shelf.

Remember that there are no hard and fast rules for styling a bookshelf, and personal preferences should guide your choices. Experiment with different arrangements and adjust them until you achieve a look that you love. Keep in mind that styling a bookshelf is an ongoing process, so feel free to update and change it as your tastes and interests evolve.
