Boubou: Serving ‘Rich Aunty’ Vibes

By – Josephine Agbonkhese

A loose-fitting gown that hides its wearer’s curves, Bubu or boubou, isn’t new among Nigerian women.
While the free-flowing gown may have been around for decades, it didn’t quite appeal to younger women for certain unknown reasons.
Modern spin brought to it lately by contemporary designers has, however, made it an object of great appeal amongst younger ladies, with notable celebrities leading the park.
Now a status symbol serving ‘Rich Aunty Vibes’ with utmost ease, the boubou’s versatility makes it a go-to option for various occasions, whether traditional, religious, evening events or even wedding ceremonies.
Today’s bubu comes in a wide variety of fabrics including damask, satin, lace, Ankara, chiffon, silk, batik, and cotton, and can be either wide-necked, v-necked, round-necked, turtlenecked, or the popular off-the-shoulder design.
