The African Fashion and Art Awards (AFAA) Summit in Abuja on March 28th, 2024, was a night filled with excitement, but nothing quite prepared me for the impact of Topkraft’s “African Bold Woman” collection.
Under the creative direction of Olusola Hellen Tolulope, the collection was a breathtaking exploration of how African heritage can be seamlessly integrated into contemporary fashion, creating pieces that are as bold as they are beautiful.
From the moment the first look appeared on the runway, I knew I was in for a treat. The model was draped in a vibrant, off-shoulder gown that featured a bold pattern of pink and yellow, creating a dynamic and captivating look. The fabric was rich in texture and seemed to move effortlessly with each step, adding an aura of elegance to the already striking design. This gown captured the essence of the collection, blending traditional African motifs with modern silhouettes to create something truly special.
As the show continued, I was struck by the versatility of the collection. One moment we were seeing beautifully tailored jumpsuits with structured bodices, and the next, sleek, flowy dresses that celebrated the curves and strength of the female form. One standout look was a strapless gown with a mix of green, blue, and black patterns that flowed gracefully down the runway. The gown was paired with delicate jewellery, allowing the bold patterns and vibrant colours of the fabric to shine without distraction.
The dresses in the collection were a personal highlight for me. They were designed with such precision and care, each one a testament to the craftsmanship and creativity that went into this collection. One particular dress, featuring a grid pattern in bold pink and black, stood out with its structured bodice and flowing skirt, which seemed to dance with the movement of the model. What I loved most about these pieces was how they managed to be both modern and timeless, rooted in African tradition yet perfectly suited to the global stage.

The collection showcased warm earthy shades alongside vivid, lively colours, which were both visually striking and deeply symbolic. The deep oranges and vibrant greens evoked the essence of Africa’s landscapes, while the dynamic patterns reflected the continent’s energy and spirit. These tones were not just a visual feast but carried a deeper resonance, embodying a proud heritage and a vision for the future.
Each shade was thoughtfully chosen, adding layers of meaning to every garment in the collection.

For me, the night was a reminder of the power of fashion to connect us to our roots while pushing us towards new horizons. The “African Bold Woman” collection was more than just a fashion line—it was an experience, one that left me feeling both humbled and uplifted, and it is one I will carry with me for a long time to come.
