“Polka Dots, Bold Colors, and Modern Elegance: A Front-Row Review of House of Zahra’s ‘Harmonious Hues’ at AFAA 2024”

By Yemisi Suleiman

When I walked into the African Fashion and Arts Awards (AFAA) 2024 in Nairobi, Kenya, on May 11, I knew I was in for an evening of fashion excellence. However, nothing could have prepared me for the visual spectacle that House of Zahra had in store with its latest collection, “Harmonious Hues.”

Seated in the front row, I had the perfect vantage point to witness the genius of fashion designer and creative director Kamorudeen Olayinka Fakoya unfold on the runway.

The show opened with an electrifying two-piece shirt and trouser set that immediately caught my attention. This wasn’t just any outfit—it was a daring statement piece that set the tone for the entire collection. On one side, the shirt and trousers were crafted from a rich dark blue fabric, punctuated with vibrant red polka dots.

The other side was a striking contrast, featuring a bold black fabric with crisp white polka dots.

The duality of the design, merging two distinct yet complementary patterns, was nothing short of genius. It was the kind of outfit that challenges conventional fashion norms and dares you to look away—though, of course, you can’t.

As the models continued down the runway, the collection revealed its versatility and depth. One of my personal favorites was the orange long sleeve shirt and pants set.

The vibrant orange hue exuded confidence and energy, perfect for anyone looking to make a bold entrance.

The tailoring was impeccable, ensuring that the outfit wasn’t just eye-catching but also flattering and functional. It struck me as the kind of ensemble that could easily transition from a high-powered business meeting to an evening out, all while turning heads.

In stark contrast, the collection also offered more understated pieces, like the nude long sleeve shirt paired with cargo pants. This outfit spoke to the minimalist in me—clean lines, neutral tones, and a versatile style that could work in any setting. It was a reminder that sometimes, less really is more, and that simplicity, when done right, can be incredibly powerful.

Then came the showstopper: a white see-through abaya that had the audience buzzing. The abaya, with its intricate patterns, was a beautiful blend of tradition and avant-garde fashion.

The sheer fabric gave it an ethereal quality, while the detailed embroidery added a level of sophistication that made it suitable for the most formal of occasions. As I watched it glide down the runway, I couldn’t help but think of all the ways this piece could be styled—layered over a sleek dress or paired with statement accessories for a truly unique look.

The collection didn’t stop there. A brown silky short sleeve shirt and pants set followed, and it was all about understated luxury. The subtle patterns woven into the silky fabric added depth and texture, creating an ensemble that was both comfortable and elegant. This was the kind of outfit that whispers rather than shouts, drawing you in with its quiet sophistication.

Another highlight was the black long sleeve jacket and pants set, adorned with playful red and white polka dots. This piece added a fun yet polished element to the collection, showing that House of Zahra knows how to blend whimsy with refinement. It was the perfect example of how to inject a bit of personality into a classic look without going overboard.

And just when I thought I had seen it all, the sky blue agbada with large orange flowers made its entrance. This piece was a bold reinterpretation of traditional attire, modernized in a way that retained its cultural essence while making it relevant for today’s fashion landscape.

The oversized floral patterns were vibrant and eye-catching, making this agbada a true statement piece.

Throughout the show, the models’ faces were adorned with striking face paint, adding an extra layer of artistry to the presentation. This creative touch not only highlighted the uniqueness of each outfit but also added a dramatic flair that captivated the audience’s attention. It was a reminder that fashion is as much about the overall experience as it is about the clothes themselves.

As the show progressed, I found myself reflecting on the sheer range and creativity of the “Harmonious Hues” collection.

Kamorudeen Olayinka Fakoya’s vision was clear in every detail—this was a collection that celebrated the beauty of contrasts, the power of simplicity, and the joy of bold, unapologetic design. It was a reminder that fashion is an ever-evolving art form, one that can be both deeply personal and universally resonant.

Leaving the event, I couldn’t help but feel excited about the future of House of Zahra. The “Harmonious Hues” collection is more than just a stunning showcase of fashion; it’s a bold statement about where the brand is headed.

With its innovative designs and commitment to quality, House of Zahra is poised to set new trends and inspire fashion lovers around the world. I, for one, can’t wait to see what they do next.
