Isi Atagamen Showcases African Heritage in New Collection

By Yemisi Suleiman

Isi Atagamen, a former supermodel and now a fashion designer, unveiled her latest collection for 2024 at the inauguration of the Isi Atagamen brand and Beauty Lounge in Lagos. The collection, named ‘Isimeme’ which translates to ‘sun’s brightness’, is a vibrant display of traditional African prints, including hand-printed batik, aso-oke, organza, and lace, used to create unique gowns, dramatic corsets worn with printed shorts, capes, and bubus.

One of the most notable pieces in the collection was the hand-painted masquerade costume, which beautifully represented Africa’s ancestral heritage.

For the designer, the idea behind this collection was to showcase the limitless potential of African women, offering them comfort and style through blended traditional pieces.

Atagamen, who gained prominence more than a decade ago as the first runner-up in Nigeria’s Next Supermodel contest, reflected on her journey, stating that modeling was a stepping stone for her as she had always aspired to be a fashion designer. In 2023, she shifted her focus to incorporating traditional African elements into her designs, driven by her longing for her roots, and a desire to celebrate African heritage through her work.

In addition to launching her new collection, Atagamen also launched a combined fashion and beauty space, providing customers with a range of services tailored to enhance their beauty and style. The lounge offers hair styling, nail care, eyelash treatments, and more in a tranquil and soothing environment, allowing clients to escape the bustle of Lagos while pampering themselves.
