Crowning Poise: Regal Regalia couture hits success at Mr Oyo 2024

By Rita Okoye

The Mr Oyo Pageantry competition not only crowned a new ambassador of elegance and charisma but also ran its own contemporary Nigerian menswear runway.

In the evening of December 4, 2024, the spotlight was on the collection that demanded attention with its quiet assertion, created by Owolabi Niyi Temitope, the mastermind behind Regal Regalia.

The collection, aptly named “Dominion Ensemble,” presented a series of looks built around the very same design but realised in many colours.

The longline approach to shirtmaking deprived it of any chance of drooping. To create a moment of visual punctuation, and to ease the heaviness of the dominant base colour, a contrasting fabric was used as a deliberate yet subtle horizontal band across the chest.

This detail granted each design its presence, yet the reiteration repeated in alternate colourways across the collection seems to highlight the merits and dangers of repetition. The Points of Measure (POMs) were quite well executed: the shirts gently skimmed contours without gripping too tightly, lengths appropriately fell to the mid-thigh, and collars framed the neckline with a quiet power.

The collars are probably one of the best features of these shirts. They helped to elongate the torso, giving the contestants a dignified stage-ready presence so that the personalities are not in anything for themselves but are catapulted by their attire. The pants had a straight leg cut with a loose fall, granting free mobility to the wearer yet stamping it as a formal outfit.

All subtle details, from metallic-tipped drawstrings to clean seam lines, contributed to giving a modern touch to what might have otherwise proven to be very plain. Instep measurements were taken with great care, so the trousers brushed just above the footwear without showing too much break, which gave the contestants a very elegant presence on stage under the lights.

Stitching quality was neat and consistent, especially on the plackets and seams of the trousers, but the unvarying use of basic straight stitches somehow took away a bit from the level of finishing.

Seam allowances were on the bigger side for ease of alterations, but closer inspection would reveal that simple overlocking was relied upon instead of more advanced finishing methods like binding or double-turn seams that would have enhanced their internal polish.

The contestants maintained an equally statuesque and well-grounded look on stage, their styles enhancing their forms without muffling their individuality. They all experienced comfortable movement from their first walk on the stage through gesticulating and engaging with the judges.

Dominion Ensemble can be considered a precious addition to Owolabi Niyi Temitope’s portfolio. It asserts his command of clean tailoring, proportion management, and stage-ready design; skills that situate him confidently within the Nigerian menswear landscape. From a commercial standpoint, this collection has a market potential in its niche but may hit a ceiling that can only be broken by further innovation.

At the end of it, Dominion Ensemble at Mr Oyo 2024 was a debut success story that cemented the capacity of Regal Regalia for disciplined elegance. It crowned not only the contestants but also its designer with acknowledgement of technical competence and creative clarity.
