The evening of 3 December 2024 in Abuja held a kind of quiet majesty. The lights were soft, the setting intimate, and the anticipation in the air carried the promise of something thoughtful.
When Vinkay Collections began its presentation of Poise & Power, designed by fashion designers and creative directors Busayo Vincent Balogun and Oghenekome Otokumor, it was immediately clear that this would be a study in balance, the balance between grace and strength, softness and certainty, art and intention.
The first appearance drew the attention of everyone in the room. A deep brown tailored ensemble took form under the lights, its construction precise yet fluid.
The sleeveless top curved naturally over the shoulders, while high-waisted trousers extended into a straight, elegant fall. Draped over one arm was a structured jacket detailed with a single sculpted flower, like strength wearing its own softness. It was the language of composure translated into fabric.
Following it was a cream-toned dress that shimmered gently as it caught the light. It featured a high neckline and a slender fit that cinched slightly at the waist before flowing into a subtle front slit. Every step created a quiet movement, a small play between control and release. The piece radiated serenity; not loud, not showy, simply complete.
The collection then drifted into something more romantic. A textured blue dress with full, cloud-like sleeves appeared, the sleeves folding over the shoulders in a cascade of layered fabric. The bodice held shape while the lower half tapered to the knees, creating harmony between structure and softness. The design spoke of femininity that didn’t need permission to be bold.
The next moment brought the room alive with color. A cobalt gown floated into view, its fabric gleaming like deep ocean silk. The off-shoulder neckline framed the collarbones delicately, while a modest slit introduced motion and sensuality. It was daring but never loud, the kind of design that holds attention without demanding it.
A black piece followed, instantly commanding stillness in the room. The dress was fitted yet light, its sheer ribbed fabric layered over a dark base. Around the hem, fine feathers danced with every motion. The play of transparency and texture was exquisite, a conversation between confidence and ease.
Soon after came a shift in tone. A black co-ordinated set appeared, softly tailored and unhurried in its movement. The pleated texture of the fabric caught just enough light to outline form without clinging to it. The look carried quiet self-assurance, effortless and pure.
Then came the red. Vibrant and warm, the set featured a relaxed button-down top and matching trousers that flowed with measured grace. The color alone filled the room with energy, but it was the precision of its cut, the way the shirt framed the shoulders and the trousers moved around the ankles; that gave it life.
To close, an olive green suit entered the light. It was refined and confident, the perfect final note. The jacket, sleek and fitted, rested over a crisp white shirt that gleamed at the collar. The trousers tapered neatly, grounding the entire look in quiet strength. It was the visual definition of the collection’s name: poise embodied through structure, power expressed through calm.
When the presentation ended, the applause felt inevitable. Poise & Power was more than tailoring and fabric. It was an exploration of identity, the strength that hides in stillness, the beauty that exists in simplicity, and the self-assuredness of women who know they are seen.
