Celebrating the Magical Power of Makeup

By Josephine Agbonkhese

The diverse controversies concerning the use of makeup notwithstanding, denying the power of this man-made wonder to pull-off a 360 degree magic wherever expertly applied, will amount only to an outright display of ignorance— if not a deliberate attempt to undermine.

Whether it’s a swipe of lipstick or mascara to feel ready for the day or an intricate face design for a ceremony or festival, makeup empowers individuals to control their narrative, experiment with identity, and embrace their unique beauty.

Makeup allows people to accentuate their features, conceal insecurities, and present themselves in a way that aligns with their desired image. For example, a well-applied foundation or concealer can even out skin tone, while bold lipstick or intricate eyeliner and even subtle natural looks, can draw attention to facial features, making you feel more polished and put-together. On platforms like X, makeup enthusiasts share tutorials, product reviews, and looks that spark trends overnight, showing its power to connect and inspire.

These are no hypes. The global beauty industry alone is currently worth over $500 billion and over 80 percent of women, studies say, feel more confident with makeup. So, makeup sells and the industry is racking it in big time!

Makeup can transform how people perceive themselves, often leading to a surge in self-esteem. By enhancing features— like defining eyebrows, adding a glow with highlighter, or using blush to mimic a healthy flush— individuals can feel more aligned with societal beauty standards or their personal ideals.
A 2021 study found that makeup application can reduce anxiety and improve mood, as it provides a sense of control over one’s appearance. For example, someone might use concealer to cover blemishes, instantly feeling more comfortable in social situations. Even the now-trending “no-makeup makeup” look will subtly enhance features, showing how even minimal makeup can make you feel ready to face the world. This confidence can extend to professional settings, where a polished look might help you feel more authoritative or approachable.

Beyond enhancing appearance, makeup is a creative outlet for individuality. Through colours, textures, and techniques, anyone can experiment with their look to reflect their mood, culture, or personal style. Vibrant eyeshadow palettes or graphic eyeliner designs allow for artistic expression, while subtle, natural looks might convey professionalism or minimalism. Think also bold red lips associated with classic Nollywood glamour or the colourful face paint used in cultural festivals.
Makeup’s power generally lies in its ability to transform both appearance and mindset, offering a blend of confidence, creativity, and deep connection.
