Tanzania elects Samia Suluhu as its First Female President
Following the death of Magufuli, Samia Suluhu Hassan has been sworn in as Tanzania’s president, becoming the country’s first female president.
According to the BBC, Samia was sworn in at the state house in Dar es Salaam by Chief Justice Ibrahim Juma.
On Wednesday, the Tanzanian government confirmed President John Magufuli’s death. Hassan has now been elected as Tanzania’s sixth president, and she is Africa’s first female executive president.
She is also East Africa’s first female representative. Hassan will complete the remaining five years of Magufuli’s term, which will conclude in 2025, according to the Tanzanian constitution.
