#SocialMediaWeekLagos2019GrandFinale; Attendees share experiences

February 9,2019
Share:

The much anticipated Social Media Week 2019 came to a close yesterday, February 8th with another session of masterclasses, workshops, meetups and talks. It was sealed with  DJ Tohbahd ‘on the wheels of steels’ rending hot tunes like never before.

Attendees which comprised of people from different walks of life; both professionals and students, entrepreneurs and working class, celebrities and others flocked the venue of the event.
Allure Vanguard caught up with some of them and they shared their thoughts on #SocialMediaWeek2019. They also told us about the social media they use mostly and why.
Read excerpts below:
Gbolahan Olatunde aka Bollylomo, Media personality
” It has been great. I come mostly for work. I am hosting the UBA and RED TV corners. I was heavily involved last year, I had a panel but this year I have not been as heavily involved. But it has been great seeing great people network, amazing popular faces  and people wanting to learn”
“I use SnapChat and Twitter. I think SnapChat is like raw. My kind of social media is real.It is unfiltered. It is natural. You tailor your strength to social media. If you are just a normal person, it could be anything but if you are a talent you use your social media in line. I love to perceive as raw, natural and playful and Snapchat sells that. Twitter helps me say what is on my mind”
Toun, Student
“I’m interested in media. Basically, I feel Social Media Week 2019 has not only been an amazing opportunity to network but also learn alot from experts. I have been able to meet alot of people that influencers in my industry. I learnt a couple of things which I am hoping to use in my future”
I use Instagram mostly because I feel it is easier to relate with images  and we are getting to a world where infographics is the mainstay of telling stories.I feel like now you have like 30 seconds to pass an information but with images it is faster and more efficient”
Tonte Davies, Research Analyst
“So far, this is my 5th out of 6th editions Week that I am attending . I would say it has been way beyond impressive. I say this on the grounds that: One- I think with help of Landmark, it has helped to coalesce different section mostly under one roof. Initially at the beginning they had different centres. But now, it is just one major centre with different forums holding at the same time.
Secondly, it has to do with the individuals that have invited to form a panel. There is a lot more depth with what they are bringing on board to the discussions. Over the years , the individuals have been shallow but now there is more depth , more insights and more engagement with the information they are sharing. They are now looking at the key issues and what they are offering to the audience.
Overall, the Social Media Week 2019 has been impressive and creative”
” Lately, I found using more of Twitter. If I want to rank them- Twitter, LInkedIn, Facebook then Instagram. Twitter gives real time information, it goes beyond one person. It also gives opportunity to for your thoughts and ideas/ what you have to offer to be out there. People respond to whatever you need even in beyond one location.”
” LinkedIn has aided me in networking with people within my network and inner circle and somewhere outside the circle that would be of advantage to me in that regard
” Instagram is just for fun”
Oluwatoyin Akeem, Visa Officer
‘” It has been okay…fine. I went for the Stanbic IBTC talk. I asked a question.I  also learnt how to save your money after receiving your salary and how to pay your tithe and save for my future.
Well based on my observation, I was surprised people didn’t really turn out “
I prefer Instagram because it is more entertaining. I don’t really tweet but my colleagues and friends tell me Twitter is better. But I am more of an Instagram person”
Femi, Media professional
” This year Social Media Week has not been too well attended but it has been okay. All in all, the sections have been wonderful. They have been educative and informative. They have been well-structured in terms of timing, what comes first and what comes next. I have enjoyed some of the sections like UBA on Artificial Intelligence. The session was interesting because it showed the future of what banking can be and how it helps customers. There were others sections that were interesting in terms of using data from google. There was a section on music and how you can make money from music. and how we are not too educated in this part of the world on copyrights and licensing. There were couple of enlightening sections beneficial to most”
” Right now, I use Instagram mostly because I am a media person and the kind of work I do now. I do video content. I feel Instagram is the best platform to share my content, the nature of the app makes it easier to use”
Ized Uanikhehi,  Director of Marketing/Digital Marketer
” The crowd has not been as much as the previous Social Media Week. I have attended every edition from the 2nd till date. This year’s crowd is not as much as the others. However, the quality is actually a much better crowd.”
“The masterclasses have been awesome. I have been for two. The meetups have been great. That is why I said the quality of crowd has been good but the numbers can be compared to last year. IT is an awesome event actually.”
“I use Twitter and Facebook because that is my natural  habitant”
Feyinsola Ologun, Content Creator
” So far, my experience has been good. It has been enlightening. People came here to share knowledge. The masterclass on “Vote for stories” actually stood out for me. It was about how Nigerian storytelling can be used to portray the art and creative market. And how we can use our Nigerian stories to project our image to the world like the way we use African/ Nigerian music and literature.
And how people can buy our African literature in a way we tell in a Nigerian way not foreign way, preserving our culture and owning our narratives. It was really enlightening. The speakers are top executives in their fields.”
” I use Instagram mostly because of what I do and people I connect with i.e people in my tribe are on Instagram. So I learn a lot from them when it comes to visual direction, visual contents and tools I can easily use. The world is going digital, a lot of people use mobile phones than laptops. Instagram helps to utilise my mobile phone to reach out to people and bring money. I also learn how to use tools that are mobile friendly.”
Barbara Onianwah, Beauty blogger
“Considering that I have ben following social media week from the very first year, for me, the quality of content shared at social media week has declined overtime. It has become more boring and less interesting and very repetitive. I am here this year. I wasn’t here last year because I found nothing interesting. This year, I expected to see more because of the them which is stories i.e alot more about content . They tried as there was an improvement though…  compared to previous but I am looking forward to when it would come back to how it was at the inception”
” I use all social media because I am a blogger”
