Breaking News: Theresa May to stand down on June 7
Theresa May has announced she will resign as leader of the Conservative party on June 7, and the process to select a new leader will start the following week.
She will be the prime minister that welcomes Donald Trump on 3rd June.
She said that she has striven to make the UK a country that works for the many, not the few, and to deliver Brexit.
“Our politics may be under strain but there is so much that is good about this country. So much to be proud of. So much to be optimistic about.”
May says it has been “the honour of my life” to be the “second female prime minister, but certainly not the last.”
She said she knows the Conservative party will serve people in the years ahead. She says the importance of the office of prime minister is to fight “burning injustice”, the phrase she used at the beginning of her premiership.
She says that it will always remain a source of great regret that she could not deliver Brexit.
She quoted Nicholas Winton that “compromise is not a dirty word”.
