LEAVE THE WALLET, LEAVE HIM

In relationships, warning signs do not always appear dramatically. More often, they emerge in subtle moments through small actions, careless excuses, and seemingly harmless oversights. Yet, it is often within these quiet moments that true character is revealed.

Zainab met Kola at her cousin’s wedding. He possessed the kind of presence that easily impresses at first sight: well-dressed, eloquent, and effortlessly charming. Their conversation flowed naturally, and by the weekend he had invited her to brunch at a popular restaurant on Admiralty Way, Lekki.

For Zainab, however, it was never about the location or the luxury. Like many women, what she genuinely sought was sincerity, attention, and the comfort of being valued.

Then the bill arrived, it came to ₦22,300 and Kola searched his pockets, first casually and then with growing theatrics. His expression shifted from confidence to surprise as he announced that he must have left his wallet behind. More telling than the excuse itself was his reaction afterward.
He made no move to retrieve it, no effort to call for assistance, and no attempt to transfer the money immediately.
Instead, he simply looked at Zainab. Unwilling to create a scene as the waiter lingered and nearby diners began to notice, Zainab quietly brought out her ATM card and settled the bill. Kola responded with warm gratitude and a promise to repay her before she got home.
That repayment never came- Instead, the evening ended with affectionate messages and sweet words of appreciation.
By midweek, new requests surfaced: fuel money, assistance with his sister’s school fees, Uber fare, and temporary support until a client paid him. What Zainab initially interpreted as vulnerability, gradually revealed itself as calculated dependence.

The forgotten wallet was not merely an accident; it was a test. Once she crossed that line, she became a convenient source of financial rescue.
The real lesson here is not about the amount of money involved but about the motive. A responsible man, even in genuine difficulty, instinctively seeks to protect a woman’s dignity and comfort.
When the first instinct is entitlement rather than accountability, it signals something deeper.
Kindness should never become an avenue for exploitation.
Support should not transform into silent emotional and financial labour.
Sometimes, a single moment is enough to reveal a pattern. Recognising that pattern early is not cruelty, it is self-protection: leave the wallet, leave him; the first time.
You don’t mother grown men, you partner with ready grown ones!
