Genevieve Nnaji, Akin Omotoso, Cynthia Erivo Among The Academy’s 819 Membership Invitees

July 2,2020
Share:

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) released a list of its new 819 invitees drawn across the globe.

The list includes Genevieve Nnaji, veteran Nigerian actress, Akin Omotoso, film director and Cynthia Erivo, Nigerian-born British actress.

In a statement on Tuesday, The Academy said the list, which cuts across 68 countries, was part of its commitment to achieve diversity in membership.

It added that if all 819 invitees accept their invitations, 45% of the new members will be women while 36% are people of colour.

“The Academy is delighted to welcome these distinguished fellow travelers in the motion picture arts and sciences. We have always embraced extraordinary talent that reflects the rich variety of our global film community, and never more so than now,” David Rubin, The Academy president, said in the statement.

Dawn Hudso, The Academy CEO, said the next agenda is Aperture 2025 to advance inclusion and representation in membership and the film community.

“We look forward to continuing to foster an Academy that reflects the world around us in our membership, our programs, our new Museum, and in our awards,” he said.

The development further stretches Nigeria’s impressive run on The Academy’s membership list.

Omotola-Jalade Ekeinde and Femi Odugbemi were also invited as members of the Oscars voting body in 2018.

The 93rd Oscars, earlier billled to hold in February 2021, has been postponed to April 25, due to the coronavirus pandemic.
