Sorting Out Your Wardrobe in the New Year
By Yemisi Suleiman
Looking to starting off the New Year with a resolution to be more organized? What better way than to begin with reorganizing your closet.
There is no better time than the start of a brand New Year, to sort out your closet and decide what you want to keep, throw out or give to charity.
To help you get started, we have some handy tips that will help you keep the insides of your closet neat and tidy, and have it stay that way in the New Year and beyond.
- Sort out your clothes
Before everything else, purge first. Take everything out of your closet and sort them in terms of what you want to keep and what you don’t. In the pile that you don’t wish to keep, sell what you can, throw what cannot be kept, and donate the rest.
- Clean out your closet.
Remove everything from the closet, including hangers, and anything else that might be on the floor or shelves. Do a proper clean out of your wardrobe, to take out all unwanted insects or ants lurking around. You need a clear, clean space to plan and visualize how you are going to re-organize your closet. - Store your clothes by category.
Put back the selected items in the wardrobe, keeping like items together–dresses, shirts, and party clothes sorted differently. Keep everything you wear on a regular basis in the middle of your closet at eye level so it’s easy to find and grab in your early morning rush. - Colour-code your wardrobe.
Organizing your clothes by colours can be tedious, but the end result will make picking out an outfit so much easier, beautiful to behold and easy to navigate. - Use coordinating hangers.
Nothing screams closet chaos quite like a collection of wire and neon plastic hangers trying to peacefully coexist alongside one another. Limit the visual clutter and give your closet a sleek, streamlined look by using matching hangers for your clothes. - Some clothes are best folded.
When it comes to organising your wardrobe, not everything should be hung. Some types of clothes are best folded. Your jeans, Ankara dresses and lace for instance are best folded and stored in shelves or drawers. This way, you’ll be able to see each item in a stack clearly, making it that much easier to find what you’re looking for. - Hang scarves on hangers
Hanging your scarves keep them wrinkle-free and easy to see and access. But tying your scarves on a hanger, is a way better option for organizing them. - Utilize empty wall space for hanging accessories.
If you have a few spare spaces by the side of your wardrobe, get creative and use this area to hang accessories like belts, jewellery hats or ties.
