Tips to consider before designing a room

Here are the top 10 essential tips to know before you start with your room design ideas.

Start with an empty room

For an overall home improvement, start with an empty room and go from there. First, choose the wall colour, windows, light fixtures and then start adding big furniture and move on to smaller decor accessories. Try to always start with big things and move on to smaller, building the room bit by bit.

Avoid furniture set

Don’t make your room look cluttered by getting all pieces in a furniture set. Your home decor should be unique and have a character which evolves over time, it shouldn’t look like something you did overnight. Each piece you buy should be evaluated and blended with the rest of the room decor and look natural.

Don’t go overboard with the theme

Following a theme is a good idea as long as you don’t go overboard with it. For example you can choose a metallic color scheme but when it’s all shiny and glossy and overpowers the rest of the decor, your room starts looking like a strange theme park. So avoid that and keep the theme subtle.

Take time

The most important thing to consider here is that you’re not going to complete the interior design of the room in a day. So don’t rush into buying your furnitures especially if you’re on a budget. Take time to choose furniture and decor accessories for your room in terms of their functionality. Each piece of room decor has to live in to your home and your interior design will grow over time.

Choose your white

If you paint in white, you have to choose the right shade of white since there are thousands of whites to choose from. Paint a board with a select color and go around the room to see how it looks in the layout and lighting.

Experiment with your decor

There’s good home decor and there’s great home decor. What makes it great is that it surprises with personalised room decor tricks. You could paint your dresser, add an accent wall, setup the mood with floor lamps or ceiling lights or add a shelf of houseplants. Experiment around what you want to see in that room!

Incorporate splashes of color

Avoid making your room decor dull with neutral tones. If you have a neutral base, then mix colours. You could just use accent colour throw pillows to add some colour to your room without going overboard.

Don’t make the corners too edgy

A room has a lot of sharp edges so try to add decor accessories with rounded corners such as a round rug or round furniture like a coffee table or an ottoman.

Use area rugs

Rugs can create a warmth and add layers to the room. Area rugs help the room to give a sophisticated look and add a pop of colour, pattern and texture.

Create vignette

Vignettes create character out of decor accessories. But don’t make the mistake of placing all your personal belongings on display on the shelves. Group them in vignettes by carefully choosing what you want to show off and putting away the rest. Remember that you can change them up from time to time.
