Don’t Just Live Longer, Stay Capable
By Judy Okolo
What if the goal isn’t simply to live to 80, 90 or even 100but to still be able to climb the stairs, carry your own bags, travel, dance, get off the floor, play with your grandchildren and live life on your own terms?

We often celebrate longevity as though more birthdays automatically mean better health. But there is another question worth asking: How well will you be able to live those extra years?
Because there is a difference between lifespan and healthspan which is the years you remain strong, mobile, independent and capable. And the foundation is built much earlier than most of us realise.
After 40, muscle mass and strength can gradually decline if we don’t deliberately protect them. Long hours behind a desk, less movement, poor sleep, chronic stress and inadequate nutrition can quietly accelerate the process. You may not notice it today. But one day, simple thingswalking long distances, climbing several flights of stairs or lifting something from the floorcan suddenly feel harder than they used to.
The good news? Your body is remarkably adaptable.
You don’t need to become a gym enthusiast overnight. You need to make movement a non-negotiable part of your lifestyle.
Build strength. Resistance exercisesusing weights, resistance bands or even your body weighthelp maintain muscle and functional strength.
Protect mobility. Stretch, walk, change positions frequently and practise movements that keep your joints and body moving comfortably through their range.
Eat for strength. Adequate protein, vegetables, fruits, whole grains and healthy fats provide the building blocks your body needs to repair, maintain and perform.
Recover intentionally. Sleep isn’t laziness. It is part of your wellness strategy. Your body needs quality recovery to function at its best.
And don’t underestimate everyday movement. Taking the stairs, carrying your groceries, walking instead of driving a short distance or playing actively with your children or grandchildren all count. Your body was designed to movenot merely to sit through meetings and commute home.
The objective isn’t to look younger. It is to remain capable.
Capable of travelling without worrying about your body. Capable of enjoying your favourite activities. Capable of showing up for the people you love. Capable of pursuing your dreams without your physical limitations becoming the deciding factor.
Because your 50s, 60s and beyond should not be a period of shrinking your life to fit your body.
Build a body that allows your life to keep expanding.
Don’t wait until strength disappears before you decide it matters.
Start today: move more, strengthen your body, nourish it well and protect your mobility. Your future self is depending on the choices you make now.
Until next time, lets glow intentionally.
