Quick Note on Cleansing
By Funmi Azike
The role of the skin in our over-all appearance can never be over-emphasised which is why proper care for it is absolutely important. It is not enough to stock up on beauty products; the most important is getting the right ones for your skin type and USING IT CORRECTLY. Starting with cleansing, this essential skincare ritual can be extremely rewarding when done the right way. It instantly improves the health and appearance of the skin without causing any discomfort.
Why We Cleanse
Every day dirt, sweat, harmful bacteria, oil, chemical substances (from beauty products and make-up) and dead skin cells build-up on the skin’s surface causing skin problems and accelerate aging if not properly removed. Also, dirt and make-up that lodge in the crevices of the skin can work their way deep into the skin and cause irritation/infection. Dirty skin looks dull and ages more quickly. The skin should be gently cleansed every day to dislodge all the build-up using a cleanser. A cleanser is a skin care product designed to dislodge dirt oil and make-up from the skin’s surface.
Cleansing Tips
Cleansers come in different forms including liquid, cream, bar, and wipes. Generally, liquid cleansing gels/washes are usually the most preferred option as they are easier to use, longer lasting and more hygienic.
Cleansing wipes are great for emergencies but not as effective as rinse-off cleansers. When used, do not forget to wash the skin later on as soon as you can. Avoid leaving any cleansing product on your skin longer than necessary.
Whatever type of cleanser you choose, the most important thing to look out for is the ingredients. Cleansers consist basically of oil, surfactants and water with other added ingredients formulated to meet a wide variety of needs. Choosing a cleanser with the right ingredients for your skin type and needs will keep your skin healthy and vibrant. However, a wrong choice can irritate your skin if it is too drying or clog your pores if it is too rich for your skin. Do not forget to read follow the instructions on the product.
Ideally, a good rinse-off cleanser eliminates the need for a makeup remover but if you choose to use one, make sure it is in a cream or lotion form. Most make-up items are oil or wax-based and requires a wax/oil combination to remove them.
Regular body soap usually dries the skin especially the delicate face and neck areas. Unlike soap, a good cleanser removes all dirt and make-up without causing irritation or damage to the skin. It leaves the skin feeling silky and supple not dry and tight as with soap that can cause irritation. Cleansers are designed to be gentle on the skin while powerful enough to remove dirt and make-up effectively.
