Xenophobic attack in South Africa: Nigerian celebrities speak out

Nigerian celebrities have taken to their social media pages to rebuke the xenophobic attack on their countrymen in South Africa.

Xenophobic attack in South Africa: Nigerian celebrities speak out

Reports of the attack started trickling in on Sunday and by Monday, it had seen the destruction of more than 50 shops and business premises mainly owned Nigeria.

Sadly, many South African natives on twitter justified the attack on Nigeria, claiming that they were thriving more than them in their own country.

With hashtags #stopxenophobia, celebrities are calling on the Nigerian government to take action about the recent incident.

Below are some of the celebrities who spoke out

Twitter is such a strange place, it’s like people are filled with so much anger, everyone is a target. How do you skip all these tweets and decide to hold on to the last slide, I have seen people call celebrities out yet on their own pages, they’ve said nothing. In their own communities they remain silent. I have seen people incite the public to burn buildings, destroy modems, boycott South African businesses where Nigerians also work and make a living and I ask if we respond with Violence who wins? If we send people home who will fend for their families? So because I choose to spread love I am accused of being on the fence, I have heard so many arguments on this matter and I think we need to free ourselves from mental slavery. No one wins here. They say Nigerians are selling drugs and my response is it is not a true representation of the average Nigerian, they say we take over their lands and take their jobs but our doors are open to them here, many businesses have Foreign managers and we don’t Complain. It is time from Africa to truly unite . The war is not between us, the war is “ignorance”. Not all South Africans are Xenophobic, we all have to come together to educate the ignorant amongst us and while we are at it, can we also stop the tribal statements among ourselves, can we all just stop? To those blaming celebrities, what have you done in your work place, your communities, your own space? Are you promoting destruction of properties and businesses or are you educating people on how to do better? First they come at you for not lending your voice, you do but they come st you even harder for not saying what they want to hear and if you ask them what they have done….. Nothing. Absolutely nothing. If this makes me on the fence then I’ll rather sit on it and watch my nails dry ❤️

Dearest South Africa ?? and it’s people, it is disheartening that you have made it a duty to keep executing Nigerians for no just cause. You waste the lives of our brothers and sisters who work hard daily to improve your economy while your youth are too lazy to work. You are being ravaged by HIV/AIDS and alcoholism because of your own inability to obtain education or empower yourselves. And you are taking out your frustrations on Nigerians!! Why? Seems you’ve forgotten your history so soon that it was in 1976 and 77 that Nigeria being the First Nation that sent it full force to help liberate you from apartheid and killings in the hands of your masters. How soon have you forgotten the blood and money spent by Nigeria to set you free, yet you’ve chosen to kill our people in your land while you people live freely and grow your multi billion dollars industries in my country Nigeria ??. How soon have the oppressed become the oppressor. It is sad indeed. It won’t cause Nigerians a second to set ablaze MTN, DSTv, Shoprite and slaughter all your people living in Lagos and across Nigeria. But Nigerians are peaceful people and very hospitable. You have a set trend you can not keep up with. Let the sleeping dog lie. A Tanzanian taxi driver killed a South African and the anger is melted on Nigerians? Really.. You will not be able to curtail this beast you are about to awaken because it will swallow you. This is not the South Africa Madiba envisaged. This is not the South Africa Nigerian artist like Sony Okosun sang and wept for. To be for warn is to be for arm. Dearest Nigerian President and Vice President, this a result of your failed government and your response to your citizens be slaughtered around the globe. You can only hide behind your Aso Rock for so long before you all corrupt psychopaths meet the wrath of the Nigerian citizens you’ve been neglecting and left in abject poverty while you all enrich your selves. I pray for all the fellow Nigerians to please hold still and keep hope alive. Our day will come when we will hold all accountable. Shame on you South Africa ????? Nigeria ?? will always rise. We are a better people regardless of our shortcomings.

So I have read some comments & some people have said the video circulating the internet was an old video and had nothing to do with xenophobic in SA, Thank God!! but on a second note it still doesn't make it right, pls all African governments should come together and try to stop this barbaric act by passing a law that will mercilessly deal with any one caught in such act of burning a human being no matter his/her crime…… we have Laws, we are not animals ? Africans killing each other is a very very sad one?? on a third note pls our govt should also wage in fast on the recent fighting going on in SA before it gets out of hands ?? @muhammadubuhari @profosinbajo #GeoffreyOnyeama Pls do something fast?? #letpeacelead #xenophobicattacks #stopxenophobia #saynotoxenophobia

Dear South Africa, Do you see the shame you bring upon Africa? Do you see how you let the western media report news on our issues? Why have you let a few lazy and emotionally twisted natives define you as a nation? What ever happened dear South Africa? What happened to the love for Africans by Africans? What happened to the time Africa and indeed Nigeria fought for your freedom from the shackles of apartheid? Why do you hate any African who thrives and succeeds on your soil? You do not treat others this way… only Africans. Others are allowed to come set up big factories or stores and thrive but not Africans and definitely not Nigerians. South Africa has some of the biggest businesses in Nigeria today. They are secure… I don't see anyone killing them or burning their businesses. We have come a long way as Africans. It is time to employ EVERY MEANS to rid our hearts of self hate: at this point, ANY MEANS will do. I implore the Nigerian Government to wake up! Diplomacy of retaliation is still diplomacy after all.

For most of my teenage years I lived in South Africa so seeing the recent news about xenophobia frightens me, the news about them raping their own and murdering them scars me!!! my family still live there and So it’s still home for me but at this rate I’m scared to the bones to go over there with my family… We welcome South Africans and other foreigners exceptionally well in Nigeria, Ycee said we even treat them better than we treat our own and quite frankly I agree. So why are we over there minding the business that pays us and we’re being attacked and killed.. ???? Can the Nigerian government DO SOMETHING!! South Africans we need to do better! We are all one. ??#stoptheattacks #stopxenophobia #weareone

Calling on my own President @muhammadubuhari. Sir, this is not one of those times you can be silent on an issue. We need to take a stand. A very strong one! We can’t stand by and watch our brothers and sisters hacked to death and their life’s work destroyed! Enough is enough o! People have a right to work freely anywhere they live. In Nigeria, other Nationals work freely including South Africans and they are treated with dignity and respect. The least we expect is for others to return the favour especially our fellow Africans. This has gone on for far too long! Sir, please we are begging. Help us look into this! Discuss with fellow African leaders and let’s put a DEFINITE end to this! ?? ? #SayNoToXenophobia

I've been thinking all morning about the #xenophobicattacks in South Africa and honestly I'm sad that after everything we've been through as black people.. as African people…we choose to do this to ourselves!!! Its truly sad but We are our own problem!!! . My South African brothers and sisters Nigerians are NOT your problem! Our competition should be against poverty and hunger not each other. I've collaborated successfully with South Africans many times and I felt the love but when things like this happen it makes you question things..especially as I go to South Africa soon to speak at #WcollectiveXWorldEconomicForum event… I'd be lying if I said I didnt fear for my safety a bit but just as I know that not all Nigerians are fraudsters I choose to believe that not All South Africans are #xhenophobic we just need to do better as a people. I've been all over Africa and the reality is that we are more alike than we are different Collaborate to Compete! I believe strongly that to move this continent forward we need to build exportable Pan- African brands. This is almost impossible when our response is violence against each other…

Horrific. Chilling. We've allowed this to go on for too long. We are upset one day and forget the next, because we aren't the Nigerians in the line of Fire. I too am guilty of this. That is how handshake has started to reach the elbow. I'm ANGRY but I know that is not the emotion to lead the next course of action on. But what I do know is something MUST be done. The South African government MUST not only acknowledge these raids and slaughter of foreigners in their country, but step in actively to defend every aspect of their human rights. This is where we also need the Nigerian government to come out strongly against these happenings and demand the investigation and prosecution of the perpetrators. This is happening. This is not a hoax. We don't need to wait till it happens to someone we know before we sit up and pay attention.

This is so sad!!! Why??? Must violence be the solution to every problem? I woke up to horrific pictures and videos of our country men being attacked and killed! This has to stop o!!!!! We all are out there hustling to put food on our tables! Why the killings. I appeal to the Nigerian Government to SEE TO THE IMMEDIATE END of this. All lives matter!!! #saynotoxenophobia
