Tyler Perry’s new Netflix movie sparks debate

Debate has ensued on the Nigerian Twittersphere in the wake of the release of the official trailer of ‘A Fall From Grace’, a movie by Tyler Perry, American actor and filmmaker.

The forthcoming thriller had its trailer released on Netflix, American streaming giant, days ahead of its premiere on January 17.

The film follows the story of Grace Waters (Crystal Fox)  a woman who decided to give love another try after being disheartened over her ex-husband’s affair.

Grace learns the horrible secrets about her new husband (Mehcad Brooks) but her vulnerable side turns violent with her ending up in jail for alleged murder and fraud.

Just like his other movies (especially ‘Acrimony’), the latest instalment has gotten people talking on social media platforms especially Twitter as it currently sits high on the trends list.

While a segment of users accused the movie director of being obsessed with depicting the trauma black women suffer from men in his movies others argued he is exposing real-life issues black women can relate with.

“Tyler Perry made a Netflix debut showcasing once again from the perspective of the woman how twisted men make monsters of women and those whose impact is yet to be felt in their family let alone globally, suddenly have an issue,” Segun Awosanya said.

“Tyler Perry refuses to produce a show that doesn’t involve the emotional abuse, torture, and beating of the downtrodden black women,” a Twitter user said.

“What if Tyler Perry just loves to tell a black woman’s story instead of thinking he’s obsessed with seeing black women battered and abused with the plot(s) of his movies,” another user said.
