Nigerian govt revokes AIT, Silverbird, Raypower, Rhythm’s license

August 19,2022
Share:

AIT, Silverbird TV, Raypower FM, and Rhythm FM, among others, have had their licenses cancelled by the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) for allegedly failing to comply with renewal requirements.

The commission has also instructed its state offices to coordinate with local security organizations to promptly halt broadcast station operations.

It is believed that the action may not be unrelated to government efforts to exert pressure on the impacted stations and, as a result, take control of the Nigerian media landscape.

This is especially true given since some of the affected TV outlets are controlled by opposition lawmakers and have voiced their disapproval of the current administration.

The impacted stations’ broadcast licenses were revoked, according to NBC, since they neglected to renew them for a total of N2.66 billion.

The action was taken after a list of stations that had not yet renewed their licenses was made public, following a statement published by NBC’s Director-General, Balarabe Ilelah, on Friday.

According to the Commission, they were given a two-week grace period in May to accomplish this before facing the danger of having their broadcast licenses withdrawn.

Ilelah further instructed NBC offices around the country to work with the security services to ensure prompt compliance while also ordering the affected stations to stop down in the next 24 hours.

”Three months after the publication, some licensees are yet to pay their outstanding debts, in contravention of the NBC Act CAP N11, laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, particularly section 10 (a) of the third schedule of the Act.

In view of this development, the continued operation of the debtor stations is illegal and constitutes a threat to national security.

Therefore, after due consideration, the NBC hereby announces the revocation of the licenses of the under-listed stations and give them 24 hours to shutdown their operations.”
