EKO LUXE: A CRITICAL REVIEW OF TYANA’S COUTURE COLLECTION AT AFRICA FASHION WEEK NIGERIA 2024
By Josephine Agbonkhese
The Africa Fashion Week Nigeria 2024 X runway show, held on December 7, 2024, was a medley of cultural opulence and tailoring ingenuity. Designers from across the continent brought their creative visions to life, with collections ranging from avant-garde statements to ready-to-wear staples.

Amidst the broad mix, Hope Nwaiwu’s Eko Luxe Collection for Tyana’s Couture stood out for its bold use of Ankara and lace. Still, for the interaction it claimed to establish between tradition and modernity. Hope announced the collection’s name before her models came on the runway, and she described it as “a love letter to Lagos, capturing its vibrant essence and the multifaceted elegance of its women.”
The Eko Luxe Collection features ensembles where Ankara and lace intertwine. Hope Nwaiwu’s illustrator and garment constructor expertise is evident throughout the collection. Her illustrations likely played a pivotal role in visualizing the harmonious interplay between Ankara and lace, ensuring that these distinct fabrics complemented rather than overwhelmed one another.
Notable pieces include the mini-A-line gown with a turtleneck and long sleeves, black lace overlaying the Ankara bodice, and a fully Ankara skirt. The overlay technique creates depth and dimension; the lace sleeves add a delightful contrast.
The transition to an all-Ankara skirt makes the piece visually dynamic. However, the puckering of the lace fabric in some areas on the gown’s bodice showed some stitching errors. Lace, a fabric that demands precision, should have been integrated through a concealed stitch for smooth transitions.

Another standout piece is the two-piece outfit. Here, Ankara also serves as the base fabric beneath a lace overlay. The high-waisted Ankara short is paired with a puff-sleeve crop top. The puffed sleeve of the top and waistband of the shorts were exclusively Ankara.
The puff sleeve, although effective, overshadowed the outfit’s balance with its volume, making the top seem a little cumbersome. Pockets in the shorts and the reinforced bands displayed attention to functionality – a feature that many fashion collections often do not possess.
The brilliance of the Eko Luxe collection lies in its juxtaposition of fabrics and the shapes chosen to highlight them.
The A-line mini gown, for instance, is a classic shape reimagined with modern materials, appealing to women who favour both modesty and trend. The puffed sleeve crop top, on the other hand, caters to a younger demographic, marrying flair with functionality. Concerning catering to diverse fits and sizes, this collection could benefit from adjustable elements or strategic darts to expand the collection’s inclusivity. The lack of embellishments also left the designs without an elevated look.

While leaning toward semi-formal and casual occasions, these pieces could easily transition to evening wear with the right accessories. The functionality embedded in the designs, including pockets and comfortable shapes, enhances their marketability.
The Eko Luxe Collection will perform well in markets that appreciate Afrocentric designs with a modern twist. While this collection is a commendable showcase of Hope Nwaiwu’s skills and creative vision, it has room for growth. The collection offers a bold narrative celebrating Lagosian elegance, with standout moments in fabric interplay and functional design.
However, a deeper focus on construction precision and finishing touches could elevate Tyana’s Couture from a promising brand to a household name in African fashion.
