Veteran artist and fashion designer, Jimi King, turned 70 last Sunday. The designer, renowned for his creative pieces – a fusion of art and ethnic fashion – led friends and family to an intimate dinner at the Turaka rooftop restaurant, Ebony Life Place, Victoria Island.
Described as a man of superlative value to friends and community, Jimi King received encomiums from his friends. His long-time friend, Dr. Mudiare Onobrakoeya, described him as a “detribalized Nigerian, very generous, who would give the shirt off his back.”
Bayo Adegbe, popularly known as Modela, a former model for the Jimi King brand, said, “Jimi King is the one designer who will take every adire material and make them into unique pieces that stand out.”
Decked in one of his adire pieces, Jimi King cut his birthday cake, cheered by friends, while a highlife band serenaded him with popular gospel tunes.
