Tips for Beautiful Hands
By Yemisi Suleiman
Caring for your hands is essential, as they are often exposed to environmental stressors, and can show signs of aging and damage more quickly than other areas of the body.

Here’s a beauty guide to keeping your hands healthy, hydrated, and youthful:
1. Regular Cleansing
Gentle Soap: Use a mild, moisturising soap to wash your hands. Avoid harsh soaps that can strip natural oils.
Wash with lukewarm water instead of hot water, which can further dry out the skin.
2. Moisturise Frequently with a Hand Cream:
Apply a rich hand cream or lotion immediately after washing your hands to lock in moisture. Look for products containing ingredients like glycerin, shea butter, or hyaluronic acid.
3. Night Care:
Consider using a thicker cream or even a hand mask before bed. Wearing cotton gloves overnight can enhance absorption.
4. Sun Protection/ Sunscreen: Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 to your hands daily, especially if they are often exposed to sunlight. This helps prevent sun damage and pigmentation.
5. Exfoliate Regularly
Gentle Scrubs: Use a gentle exfoliating scrub once a week to remove dead skin cells and promote smoother skin. You can make a DIY scrub with sugar and olive oil or purchase a commercial product.
For Chemical Exfoliants consider using products with alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) or beta hydroxy acids (BHAs) for a more thorough exfoliation.
6. Drink Water:
Staying hydrated from the inside out is crucial for maintaining skin elasticity and moisture. Aim to drink plenty of water throughout the day.
7. Avoid Over-Washing
While it’s important to wash your hands regularly, over-washing can lead to dryness. Use hand sanitiser when soap and water aren’t available, but choose alcohol-free formulas when possible.
Protect from Harsh Chemicals:
When using cleaning products or doing dishes, wear rubber gloves to protect your hands from harsh chemicals and hot water.
8. Nail Care
Keep your nails trimmed and shaped to prevent breakage and hangnails.
Moisturise Cuticles: Apply cuticle oil or cream to keep cuticles hydrated and prevent cracking.
9. Hand Massage: Regularly massage your hands to improve circulation and relieve tension. Use a moisturising lotion or oil during the massage for added benefits.
10. Seek Professional Treatments
Manicures: Treat yourself to regular manicures to keep your hands looking polished and well-groomed.
Professional Treatments: Consider treatments like paraffin wax dips or chemical peels for deeper hydration and rejuvenation.
