By Adesuwa Ewoigbokhan
Mental intimacy is the cornerstone of any strong, meaningful relationship. It’s about creating a deep emotional connection with your spouse, built on trust, understanding, and mutual respect.
Achieving and maintaining mental intimacy in a relationship can be quite challenging at times, but prioritising it, couples can help to create a solid foundation for a fulfilling and lasting partnership.

Here are practical steps to build and achieve mental intimacy in your relationship:
• Open And Honest Communication- Prioritise effective communication by sharing your thoughts, feelings, and desires with your spouse for honest expressions. Encourage them to express themselves freely and openly, and reciprocate by sharing your own thoughts and emotions. Give your undivided attention to your partner, focusing on their words, tone, and body language. Avoid interrupting and dismissing their thoughts. Thus, creating a safe space for open and meaningful dialogue.
- Empathy And Validation- Is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another person. Cultivate empathy by putting yourself in your partner’s shoes, understanding their perceptive and validating their experiences, emotions, and motivations.
- Engagement Of Meaningful Conversations- Discuss topics that are important to both of you like goals, values, and aspirations, life and experiences. Go beyond surface-level discussions and engage in deeper, more meaningful stimulating conversations. Explore each other’s thoughts, feelings, and work as a team to build a deeper understanding of each other’s needs and desires.
- Create Shared Experiences- Engage in activities that you both enjoy and make time to do them together: it can be traveling, trying new hobbies, or simply spending quality time together as shared experiences, create lasting memories and deepen the connection between you and your lovebird.
- Emotional Intelligence- Being emotionally supportive is crucial for mental intimacy, helps navigate conflicts and challenges, offering a listening ear when they need to vent off their anger. Be a source of comfort and strength for each other.
- Respect Boundaries- Communicate openly about boundaries and work together to establish an agreed upon-limits, understanding and honouring your spouse’s need for personal space and alone time. Respecting boundaries promotes a sense of safety and trust, allowing mental intimacy to flourish.
- Practice Forgiveness- Inevitably, conflicts and disagreements will arise in any relationship but choosing to forgive and letting go of grudges, seeking resolution rather than holding onto resentment helps to maintain mental intimacy.
Building and maintaining mental intimacy is a journey, not a destination, it requires ongoing efforts and commitment from both partners.
