9.8 Fashion and the “Ankara Allure” Collection: A Constructive Fashion Critique

9.8 Fashion is a brand that is deeply rooted in cultural identity and is becoming more ready to expand globally as the world of modern African fashion changes.

The brand used to be based in Nigeria but is now based in the UK. Under the creative direction of Kuzan Victoria Bature, the brand is still refining its design language while staying true to its commitment to custom-made clothing for women of African descent.

The “Ankara Allure” collection is their most recent showpiece. It is an ambitious collection that celebrates the versatility, vibrancy, and depth of the stories that Ankara fabric can tell. As a critic, I’m especially impressed by how the brand can take a fabric that has been around for a long time and turn it into shapes that feel new, powerful, and very modern.

What the Collection Does Well

  1. Mastery of how to work with fabric
One of 9.8 Fashion’s best qualities is that they see Ankara not just as a patterned cloth, but as a way to tell stories. The designer shows off their skills in “Ankara Allure” by:
    Pleating with care
    Bodices with structure
    Drapery that looks good
Layered designs that make the garment look more three-dimensional

These methods take the Ankara to a higher level than its usual meaning, giving the audience a more modern and sophisticated view.

  1. A strong sense of identity and cultural confidence
The collection is still very much African in spirit. The brand has a strong sense of identity, as seen in its bold prints and use of colour blocking. This is especially important as the brand enters the UK market, where cultural differences can be a strength instead of a weakness.
  2. Tailoring Accuracy
The basic tailoring in the collection is very good. The brand’s experience making custom women’s clothing shows in the clean finishes, body-conscious shapes, and confident structure.
These things make sure that the clothes feel more elegant than commercial or generic.
  3. Ability to Adapt to the Market

9.8 Fashion is now based in the UK, which is a good place for them to meet the growing demand for African women’s fashion in the diaspora. The “Ankara Allure” pieces are bold, but their shapes can easily fit into a wider multicultural market. This lets the brand stay true to itself while reaching more people.

Things to Work On

  1. Looking at shapes that aren’t familiar
The craftsmanship is great, but the brand could tell a better story by trying out shapes that aren’t as common. Pushing the limits of structure or proportion would give 9.8 Fashion an avant-garde edge that could help it stand out even more in a crowded global market.
  2. Adding accessories
The collection could use more cohesive accessory styling, like custom headpieces, statement belts, or architectural jewellery, to make the stories stronger and the runway shows more impressive.
  3. Combinations of fabrics
Ankara is strong on its own, but adding silk organza, mesh, crepe or leather to it every now and then could add contrasting textures that make it more interesting and classy.
    Overall Assessment

“Ankara Allure” shows that 9.8 Fashion is a brand with a clear vision, skill, and cultural depth. Kuzan Victoria Bature’s ability to make clothes that honour African femininity while still being relevant around the world is a big deal, especially since she was moving and starting over in the UK at the time.

The collection shows that the brand has the potential to be a major player in the British market for modern African-inspired fashion. 9.8 Fashion is in a good place to grow from a culturally-based studio into a design house that is known all over the world as long as it keeps coming up with new ideas and improving on old ones.

The brand has a bright future because it has a strong base, a clear identity, and a clear creative vision.
