In the vibrant tapestry of Nigerian culture, beauty has always been a powerful form of expression, blending tradition with modernity. Over the decades, trailblazing women have not only entered the cosmetics industry but have also reshaped societal perceptions of beauty, challenging eurocentric ideals and celebrating African features.

From pioneering entrepreneurs who created inclusive brands to cultural powerhouses in film, music, and modeling, these icons have empowered generations. In the spirit of Women’s History Month, we spotlight remarkable women, highlighting their journeys and signature looks that continue to inspire.

Tara Fela-Durotoye: The Makeup Maven Who Built an Empire

Tara Fela-Durotoye is widely regarded as the godmother of Nigeria’s professional makeup industry. Launching House of Tara in 1998 as Nigeria’s first indigenous makeup line, she transformed a passion for beauty into a multimillion-dollar brand with studios, products, and training academies across Africa. A lawyer by training, Tara has trained over 10,000 beauty professionals and has been recognised by Forbes as one of Africa’s Young Power Women. Her work emphasises empowerment, turning beauty into a tool for economic independence for women.

Signature Look: Polished and empowering—think flawless base with bold, vibrant lip colours inspired by African hues, paired with sleek updos that exude confidence and sophistication.

Banke Meshida-Lawal: The Bridal Beauty Pioneer

Banke Meshida-Lawal, founder of BMPRO (Banke Meshida Pro), revolutionised bridal and celebrity makeup in Nigeria. Starting her career in the early 2000s, she built a brand synonymous with luxury cosmetics, with her makeup line catering to diverse skin tones. As one of the first professional makeup artists to gain widespread acclaim, Banke has glammed up Nollywood stars and brides, proving that beauty careers could be lucrative and prestigious. Her influence extends to training programs that have mentored countless artists.

Signature Look: Ethereal bridal glow with perfectly contoured cheeks, dramatic lashes, and nude lips that highlight natural features, often incorporating subtle shimmer for that red-carpet radiance.

Oke Maduewesi: The Inclusivity Advocate in Cosmetics

With a background in finance, Oke Maduewesi founded Zaron Cosmetics in 2011 to address the lack of affordable, high-quality products for African women. Expanding to multiple African countries and even Canada, her brand focuses on melanin-rich shades and has become a staple for everyday beauty. Oke’s entrepreneurial spirit has promoted economic growth through beauty, making her a key figure in democratising access to cosmetics.

Signature Look: Natural and effortless—dewy skin with warm earth-toned eyeshadows, emphasising hydration and subtle highlights that celebrate deeper skin tones.

Agbani Darego: The Global Beauty Queen

Agbani Darego made history in 2001 as the first Black African woman to win Miss World, shattering barriers and redefining international beauty standards. Hailing from Rivers State, her victory challenged the dominance of Western ideals, spotlighting slim, dark-skinned African beauty. Post-pageant, she pursued modeling with agencies like Ford Models and launched her own fashion line, AD by Agbani Darego, inspiring young women to embrace their natural selves.

Signature Look: Minimalist elegance with clean, fresh-faced makeup, short cropped hair, and long earrings that accentuate her striking features and graceful poise.

May Yul Edochie: Redefining Beauty with Queen May Beauty

Queen May Yul Edochie is not just a name, she’s a symbol of grace, resilience, and entrepreneurial brilliance. She carved out a powerful space for herself in the beauty industry with her brand, Queen May Beauty.
Her goal was simple yet impactful: to create beauty products that celebrate and enhance the natural elegance of African women.
In interviews, she often emphasises that beauty isn’t about masking who you are, it’s about enhancing what already exists.
She regularly shares beauty tips, empowerment messages, and behind-the-scenes moments from her creative process with her community, inspiring young women to pursue their passions fearlessly.
