THE TABLE HAS ALWAYS BEEN EMPTY

By Adesuwa Ewoigbokhan

“The table has always been empty, even when he was in the room.”

That was Funke’s reply when a woman at fellowship smiled and asked, “how is home? How is oga?”

Afro-American couple going through hard times in their relationships. Guilty unfaithful young man keeping hands pressed begging his angry wife to forgive him for infidelity, trying to sweet talk her

The room fell silent, every married woman present understood exactly what she meant. Her husband, Thomas comes home every night, eats quietly, scrolls through his phone, and goes to bed facing the wall. He is physically present, yet emotionally absent.
There are no conversations, no laughter, no shared prayers, no genuine interest in how his wife is coping. His body is in the house, but his heart never arrives. When Funke tries to talk, he calls it “drama,” when she asks for time together, he says, “not now, I’m tired,” if she reaches for intimacy: he sighs, “you always need something.”

So she stopped asking, runs the home almost alone as she cooks, cleans, pays bills, raises their sons, and makes difficult decisions without him. When her mother died, he sent money but never attended the funeral, his only message read, “you’re strong.” He did not comfort her, it simply confirmed she was expected to carry yet another burden by herself.
An aunt visited recently and watched Funke quietly folding Thomas’ clothes while he walked past without a word of appreciation.
She asked gently, “my daughter, where is your husband in this marriage?” Funke looked up and repeated the same sentence- “The table has always been empty, even when he was in the room.”

Many people think abandonment begins when someone walks away, it doesn’t. Sometimes abandonment happens while two people still share the same house. A spouse can disappear emotionally long before leaving physically.
Marriage is built on participation, not mere presence, providing money without affection, occupying a chair without conversation, or sharing a bed without companionship is not the fullness of partnership.

Many women today are legally married but emotionally alone, they grieve a relationship that still exists but on paper. They stop sharing their fears because no one listens, they stop expecting comfort because disappointment has become familiar.

A home does not become whole because two adults live under one roof, it becomes whole when both choose, every day, to show up with kindness, attention, and shared responsibility. The deepest loneliness is not sleeping alone, it is lying beside someone who stopped being present long ago. No marriage should leave one spouse dining every day at an empty table!
