HAVE SOMETHING TO LIVE FOR

September 20,2026

By Judy Okolo
We have spent years asking what to eat, how much to exercise and which numbers to monitor. Perhaps there is another longevity question we should be asking: What are you waking up for?

Not what wakes you up. The alarm can do that. I mean what gives you a reason to get out of bed and participate fully in your own life.
For some, it is raising children, building a business or serving a community. For others, it is faith, creating something meaningful, mentoring younger people, caring for family, travelling, learning or simply becoming the person they still believe they can be.
We call it purpose.
And increasingly, conversations about longevity are moving beyond food, fitness and medical check-ups to something less visible: whether we feel our lives have direction and meaning.
Purpose is not retirement-proof
One of the great mistakes we make is attaching our identity entirely to our job.
I am a banker.
I am a doctor.
I am a CEO.
Then retirement comes, the children leave home, a business changes or a major life chapter closesand suddenly the question becomes: Who am I now?
Purpose needs to be bigger than a position.
It does not require a grand mission or a foundation bearing your name. Sometimes purpose is simply having people who need you, work that excites you, problems you want to solve and tomorrow you genuinely look forward to.
Think of purpose as a compass. It may not remove difficulties, but it gives you direction through them.
And direction influences behaviour.
When you have something you want to be here for, taking care of yourself begins to mean something different. The walk is no longer merely exercise. Managing your blood pressure is no longer just about numbers. Sleeping well, eating better and maintaining relationships become investments in the life you still want to live.
So, how do you strengthen your sense of purpose?
Ask better questions. Instead of What am I retiring from? ask, What am I moving towards?
Stay useful. Mentor someone. Volunteer. Teach what you know. Solve a problem. Contribution creates connection.
Keep a future on your calendar. Plan the trip. Start the course. Write the book. Schedule time with people you love. Anticipation gives tomorrow texture.
Keep evolving. Your purpose at 30 does not have to be your purpose at 60. Allow yourself to begin again.
Finally, identify something that matters enough to make you protect your health.
Longevity is having enough health, connection and meaning to keep showing up.
So alongside your wellness goals, add one more prescription:
Have something to live for.
Then build a life that keeps giving you reasons to stay.
Until next time, lets glow intentionally.
