US music diva, Madonna set to adopt twin girls from Malawi

Unites States music diva, Madonna is set to adopt two four-year-old twin girls from Malawi on Tuesday, a court official in Lilongwe told AFP.

The ”Like a prayer” singer, who set up a charity called Raising Malawi in the southern African nation in 2006 and funded a surgical unit for children at the Queen Elizabeth hospital in Blantyre, the commercial hub of Malawi, adopted Malawian children, David Banda in 2006 and Mercy James in 2009.

With the twins adoption, the total number of children she has adopted from the country comes to four.

According to judicial spokesman Mlenga Mvula, speaking to AFP;

“I can confirm that Madonna has been granted an adoption order for two children,”

On January 24, local media reports said Madonna appeared before Justice Fiona Mwale, in the company of two unidentified children and several other people, before being driven away in an SUV vehicle. But according to Madonna speaking to US magazine People on the same day said;

“The rumors of an adoption process are untrue.”

Though she denied the rumors last month, multiple outlets report the High Court from Malawi granted the 58-year-old singer the ability to adopt 4-year-old twin girls from the country on Tuesday. She appeared in court with her lawyer alongside the twins’ father and uncle,who both witnessed the adoption.

According to The Guardian, the twins will be adopted from the Home of Hope orphanage in Mchinji, near the western border of Zambia, where her son, David Banda lived prior to his own adoption. A government official will travel with Madonna, the twins (named Stella and Esther) to the U.S. to ensure she can provide a suitable home for them.
