Forget florals. The print we should all be wearing this summer is gingham. Yes, that old thing. In western clothing, its introduction dates back to the 17th century. Prior to this it was a staple part of eastern culture, notable Japan, Indonesia and India. Fast forward to modern times and it’s now more associated with school uniform fabric. Until now that is. Gingham is the new must-have print and today this week we’re focusing on the gingham dress. Use our guide below to help you pick the right style for your body shape.

BODY TYPE – Straight

TOME Sleeveless Gingham dress Lela Rose dress Cutout Gingham

Your bust and hips will be more or less the same measurement and your waist will be only slightly smaller.

Celebrity Straights: Victoria Beckham, Toke Makinwa, Mo Cheddah and Cameron Diaz.

The piping which highlights the bust and waist of this fitted dress is perfect for adding the illusion of curves. The frill detail at the hem is an added bonus!

BODY TYPE – Pear

Your hips are wider than your bust and your defined waist gradually slopes out to your hips.

Celebrity Pears: Omotola Jalade Ekeinde, Joseline Dumas, Beyoncé and Kim Kardashian.

This slim-fitting asymmetric dress will be a flattering choice for pear shaped ladies. Although the print is busy, the addition of the exposed shoulders add enough detail to draw the attention your top half.

BODY TYPE – Oval

Your waist is larger than your bust and hips. Your shoulders are broader than your hips and you have an ample breast size.

Celebrity Ovals: Eniola Badmus, Patience Jonathan, Gabourney Sidibe and Melissa McCartney.

The drop waist adds a flattering touch. As does the diagonal slant of the gingham print.

BODY TYPE – Apple

Your shoulders are slightly broader than your hips and you have an ample bust. There is little definition in your waist.

Celebrity Apples: Funke Akindele, Oge Okoye, Wendy Williams and Jennifer Hudson.

This cold shoulder dress will draw attention away from your torso and towards your best features- your shoulders and your legs.

BODY TYPE – Hourglass

You bust and hips are basically the same size and your waist is well defined.

Celebrity hourglasses: Stephanie Linus, Mercy Johnson Okojie, Dita Von Teese and Marilyn Monroe.

This fitted midi dress with a defined waist is perfect for you hourglass ladies. A modern take on a classic cut.
