For two days, August 11th and 12th, it was a Fashion carnival of some sort in the city of London as the 7th edition of the Africa Fashion Week London (AFWL) took centre stage.

Held at the Freemasons’ Hall central London, one of London’s top 10 film locations which has featured in several Hollywood blockbusters, this year’s event played host to designers, fashion photographers, buyers and other fashionnistas around the globe, who flocked for the AFWL to see some of the most exciting design talents from Africa and Europe.
Over fifty designers and exhibitors too part in this year’s show, with three catwalk shows daily.
Day one featured collections from basically young designers, supported by the ‘Tour Nigeria’ designers, a segment sponsored by the Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation (NTDC) as a way of projecting and promoting Nigeria’s tourism industry through Fashion.
It featured solely African inspired collections by some established Nigerian designers; Regalia, Kola Kuddus, Maufechi, Bijelly, Goodwin Green and more.
Highlight of day one was the debut of the Moremi collection, by Nigeria’s iconic designer MonAmi. A collection that projected royalty, portraying womanhood and power, with angelic clothing and dresses with ruffles, made with some of the finest and most colourful African prints.
As headline designer for the Miss Moremi beauty pageant scheduled to hold in November, Larry Kay Ojomo of Mon’Ami Clothing said the collections, was influenced by the rich history of the people of Ife, the personality and exploits of Queen Moremi.
The beauty pageant, which is in its second year, is opened to young Nigerian ladies between the ages of 18 and 25 from across the country, with a minimum of school certificate and of five feet and five inches tall, with auditions slated to hold in Ife, Lagos and Ibadan while the grand finale holds in Lagos.
