Tennis star, Serena Williams, who took to her social media accounts to advocate for equal pay for Black women, showed off her pregnancy glow as she posed for camera in celebration of Black Women’s Equal Pay Day.
She said:
“July 31 is Black Women’s Equal Pay Day, which represents the number of days into 2017 a black woman must work to earn the same pay a white man made in 2016 — that’s nearly 8 extra months! Black women are the cornerstone of our communities, they are phenomenal, and they deserve equal pay.”
The Black Women’s Equal Pay Day focuses on the extra hard work an African American woman has to do in order to have the same pay as her white male counterpart.
According to the Center for American Progress, black women earn about 60% of what white men earn. The percentage is strikingly low in comparison to the 79% wage difference when grouping all women together.
