Citrus fruits are super refreshing & extremely nutritious! They’re packed full of vitamins and minerals like vitamin C, B vitamins, potassium, magnesium, phosphorous, & copper, as well as multiple antioxidants.
Health benefits of critic fruits
Here’s a breakdown of some common ones for you:
Lemons– Lemons consist mainly of carbs and water. They contain very little fat and protein & are very rich in vitamin C. They also contain potassium and vitamin B6 in addition to plant compounds like citrus acid, that can provide various health benefits. The most prominent fiber in lemons is pectin which can lower blood sugar levels by slowing the digestion of starch and sugar. Because of their sour taste, they are commonly used in juices, sauces, and seasonings rather than eaten whole.
Limes– Like lemons, limes are also very sour and consist mostly of carbs and water. They’re high in vitamin C which may help prevent iron deficiency anemia and also contain small amounts of iron, calcium, vitamin B6, thiamine, and potassium. Additionally, limes have active compounds that function as antioxidants like flavonoids, limonoids, kaempferol, quercetin, and ascorbic acid.
Oranges– Oranges contain vitamin C in addition to fiber, thiamine, folate, and antioxidants like hesperidin, beta-cryptoxanthin, anthocyanin, & lycopene. Like the other citrus fruits, oranges are mostly carbs and water, however they are much sweeter than lemons and limes. Despite their sugar content, they have a low glycemic index of 31–51.
Grapefruit– Grapefruits are low in calories & high in nutrients. They are full of water and have a decent amount of fiber which can keep you full longer and aid healthy digestion & weight loss. Additionally, they have more than 15 beneficial vitamins and minerals like vitamin C and A and are full of antioxidants like beta-carotene (converted into vitamin A), lycopene, and flavanones.
