Afropop: Universal Music Group signs Kenya’s Sauti Sol
Universal Music Group (UMG), a global music corporation based in the US, has signed an exclusive recording agreement with Sauti Sol, a Kenyan Afropop band.
The Universal Music Africa (UMA), a division of Universal Music Group (UMG), announced the recording deal with the four-man band on Thursday.
Taking to their Twitter page, the band also described the agreement with UMG as their first major deal while expressing their gratitude to fans for their patience.
“We are delighted to announce our partnership with Sauti Sol, one of the most innovative and creative groups to have broken through from Africa in recent years,” said Sipho Dlamini, MD of UMG South Africa & Sub-Saharan Africa.
“Universal Music Africa is dedicated to helping the best African music talent reach new audiences around the world and we are excited to welcome them to our global UMG family.
“We look forward to working together to ensure they are able to authentically celebrate Africa through music and to help introduce their unique blend Afro-pop to new listeners everywhere.”

The Sauti Sol comprises three crooners and one guitarist, including Bien-Aimé Baraza, Willis Chimano, Savara Mudigi, and Polycarp Otieno respectively.
A deal with the UMG is expected to give the band access to the latter’s grandiose multinational network of renowned artises towards feeding their music to a much larger audience.
Tiwa Savage, Afrobeats singer, had earlier left Don Jazzy’s Mavin Records to join the likes of Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, Rihanna, and other globally renowned singers at the UMG.
