Desmond Elliot Admitted Social Media Aided His Election victory – Video

An old video wherein Desmond Elliot, an actor-turned-politician, admitted that social media was instrumental to his emergence as a lawmaker has resurfaced online and gone viral.

Elliot, who is representing the Surulere constituency in the Lagos state house of assembly, was reacting to questions from journalists in the less than one-minute footage taken in 2015.

Asked how he was able to combine his tight schedule as a legislator with maintaining a good social media presence, the 46-year-old had said: “I have made it a point of duty because the social media was very instrumental to my victory”.

He had further described the social media as an essential platform to keep his constituents abreast of happenings.

“l have to let them know step in, step out everything that happens. This is 2015, so you have to keep people abreast of situation of things,” he added.

The video has since become a sensation online amid claims that the filmmaker backed calls for regulation of social media in the country.

In another video that surfaced on Thursday, the legislator had told his colleagues that there would be no Nigeria in five years if the vices of social media aren’t tackled.

The lawmaker’s comment, which came in the wake of the crisis that rocked the #EndSARS protests, had attracted heated backlashes a development that prompted him to later apologise.
