VIBES ON VIBES: A REVIEW OF FAROUK’S LUXE ANKARA 2020 COLLECTION

Brighten up your wardrobe. Elevate your style

By Rita Okoye

Imagine a world where creativity knows no bounds. It is beautiful, isn’t it? It feels like stepping into an entirely new horizon where the “conventional” and novelty collide ― the result is nothing short of a fashion conversion, with Farouk Adekunle Adepoju leading the charge.
As the executive director and creative mind behind Titan Luxe, a 2ist-century women’s clothing brand, Farouk’s vision has always been to present Authentic African Designs that connect with a global audience. With his inspiring Ankara Vibes Apparel 2020 collection, he’s not only pushing boundaries but also reappraising the African fashion industry, emphasising how the world should see this landscape.

In a pertinacity where trends come and go, Farouk Adekunle Adepoju’s vision is timeless. His approach to Ankara is reminiscent of the work done by fashion icons like Stella Jean who has also used African prints to break barriers in the fashion world. Stella Jean, a Haitian-Italian designer, is celebrated for her unique designs that blend her Caribbean heritage with Italian tailoring.

According to her, fashion is a way of communication. ‘My aim is to make African prints an essential part of the international vocabulary’, are her famous words, dedicated to her brand’s mission.

Likewise, Nigerian-born British designer Duro Olowu is another key figure in using African prints to weave narratives. His designs have been worn by influential women like Michelle Obama and Solange Knowles, demonstrating how African fabrics can hold their own on the global stage. Olowu believes in creating clothes that have a bit of soul and can make women feel strong, beautiful, and able to express themselves.

Farouk’s Ankara Vibes 2020 Collection carries a similar ethos, allowing women to express their cultural pride with a modern panache.
His work has a ripple effect that goes beyond the runway and communicates a message of pride, culture, and elegance, bringing the essence of African traditions to the forefront of international fashion conversations. His ability to honour African heritage while blending it seamlessly with global design trends makes him a true innovator in the fashion world.
The Ankara Vibes 2020 collection is more than just a showcase of garments; it’s an artistic journey that captures the essence of the African spirit and blends it into the fabric of cosmopolitan couture. It’s a call for all fashion enthusiasts to embrace a style that is as unique as it is dynamic, as rooted in tradition as it is in modernity.

This collection is an assemblage of African heritage and trendy designs, all wrapped up in bustling Ankara fabric. What a complete package!

Farouk’s expedition into the design world started with a simple yet profound ambition: to merge the bold patterns of African textiles with the sleek lines of modern couture. His commitment to this mission is visible in every piece of the Ankara Vibes 2020 collection. This fashion exhibition is the peak of innovation, where each cut captures traditional and global fashion narratives.

Farouk’s keen eye for detail and his love for cultural richness breathe life into designs that appeal to both the seasoned fashion authority and the trend-setting novice.

Also, embedded in this collection are bold, bright, and unapologetically African fabrics. Over the years, Ankara has evolved from its traditional roots to become a symbol of modern elegance, and Farouk has masterfully harnessed its versatility. From stylish skirts and blouses that turn heads at social events to stunning gowns fit for the high-class party life, this array of jaw-dropping designs speaks to every occasion and commands lasting attention.

For the Titian Luxe brand, it’s about communicating history without uttering a word, and Farouk’s designs do just that with their fearless use of colours and patterns.
With attention to the designer’s motif, originality, choice of colour and quality of textile, stitch and further embellishments, this artistic impression is a 10 out of 10.
Influenced by trendy and voguish ensembles, with a trait of present-day styles, each outfit transcends cultural boundaries, making every design speak the language of contemporary fashion enthusiasts.
From the expressive heart-shaped off-shoulder blouse to the divulging mini skirt, this exquisitely detailed buba top features the highest level of artistry, the fitting skirt effortlessly creates a body contour that accentuates the model’s figure.
Originating from western Nigeria, the buba is a fit-loose blouse famous for its simple yet elegant design, particularly for comfort in warm climates. Its versatility has made it a symbol of grace and sophistication. The buba’s adaptability makes it a perfect canvas for showcasing diverse interpretations of African fashion, ensuring its relevance in today’s fashion tête-à-tête.
Traditionally crafted from a sustainable Ankara textile, the cuts and construction of the Buba Bliss dress may pay homage to African convention but its execution is so precise and stylish that it seamlessly fits into any modern wardrobe.
Adorned with captivating patterns, the fabric highlights the relevance of floral prints on Ankara textiles as a symbol of beauty, womanliness and fluorescence.
Comfort is non-negotiable when it comes to the Buba Bliss outfit. Titan Luxe perfectly balanced aesthetics and wearability with the feathery material that feels like a second skin. From the reinforced seams to the meticulous stitching, Farouk ensures that this dress will remain a cherished part of your wardrobe for years to come, withstanding the test of time and trends.

In the same spirit, the Calabar Chic dress stylishly arrests the lively spirit of African fabric traditions. This work of art is more than just a piece of clothing, it’s a tribute to the rich cultural composition of the southern region of Nigeria. Capturing the essence of elegance, this dress spotlights the deep-rooted traditions of the Calabar people through its eye-catching hues of yellow, pink, black and white. The designer’s intentionality to opt for bright colours is associated with the flashy taste of adventurous fashion aficionados.

Crafted with custom-made body features that effortlessly hug and enhance every curve, this “chic” dress is designed to appreciate the feminine form. Accompanied by an over-lapping skirt, this outfit is a distinguishing fashion command, as far as trends remain a testament to individual style.

Compared to the typical Dutch wax with faint back prints, the designer’s fabric choice offers a luxurious feel but is not of the best quality as the print’s reverse is so evident. Similarly, the exaggerated and deep V-shape cut at the front of the blouse appears too flattering and revealing. A smooth blend of the trendy skin net material that matches the model’s skin tone would have given the front view a less distractive look, without meddling with the designer’s original master plan. Alternatively, the deep cut would have made an even more stylish look if it had been placed at the back of the blouse. And with those elbow-length flair sleeves, the model’s audience would still not miss out on the details.

Inspired by the Indian tradition, the choli (a cropped blouse) worn with sarees and lehengas, often exposes the midriff. This style has deep cultural roots and has been part of Indian fashion for centuries. The midriff or “open belly” blouse is seen as an expression of femininity and finesse as showcased in the Ankara Vibe Collection not only compliments the model’s slim figure but also stresses the endearing features of an African woman.

Because puffy sleeves have made a captivating resurgence in African fashion, serving as a gentle reminder that first impressions matter the most, these voluminous sleeves, often seen in traditional garments exude a sense of grandeur and cheerfulness that captures the essence of African arts. Today, designers like Farouk have creatively incorporated balloon sleeves to enhance the structure of their garments, making them perfect for both celebratory occasions and everyday wear.

The dramatic effect of these sleeves not only improves the complete look but also honours Africa’s rich textile heritage where patterns and colours take centre stage. With each flutter and flare, puffy sleeves breathe life into garments, turning them into striking masterpieces that resonate with the spirit of celebration, confidence, and individuality in the modish African woman’s wardrobe.

The natural makeover balances the seemingly dramatic outfits, adding a finishing touch to the model’s overall look Her shoes are like platforms created by the designer to elevate her poise and charisma. However, a pair of bright colour heels or sneakers would have added a full stop to this long-coming fashion statement.

Farouk’s understanding of fabric flow and structure allows these pieces to drape beautifully, highlighting the wearer’s elegance. Each outfit is a communication medium that ensures every woman feels like a queen. Whether fashion fete, a social affair or a special occasion, these dresses promise to upgrade the modern woman’s presence and exude an air of regal confidence.

So, whether you’re headed to a sophisticated soirée or a casual get-together with friends, Farouk’s Ankara Vibes collection is the ultimate expression of fashion independence for you. It allows you to command the atmosphere and take charge if it, knowing that you are meant to shine with every step you take.
This is fashion at its finest ― an unending vibe of elegance, and a challenge for fashion enthusiasts to look beyond the ordinary and embrace the extraordinary, making Farouk’s creations not just an addition to their wardrobe but a vital part of your fashion journey.
