5 foods to eat when you have period cramps

For some, the hardest day of the month is when you get your period. When your period begins, the mixture of cramps, bloating, and mood changes may make you want to plunge headfirst into a whole chocolate cake — but, although it can look delicious, it won’t help with the physical symptoms.

You should change your diet to incorporate any ingredients that really benefit, rather than piling up on NSAIDs, sewing a bunch of heating pads into a comfortable robe, and binge-watching all the Netflix you can stand.

Here’s what you can put in your mouth to get rid of those cramps.

Water

While it can sound counterintuitive, drinking water simply helps the body retain less water. A large glass of water will help relieve some of the bloating that comes with your time. If you don’t like drinking water by itself, try cabbage, watermelon, or fruit, which are both water-based items. Another solution for relieving cramps is to stay hydrated with warm or hot drinks.

Get those dark, leafy greens to eat

You lose iron when you lose blood every month, which can make you feel weak and lethargic. Leafy greens such as kale and spinach are both nutrient powerhouses and excellent iron reserves. For a crunchier comparison, add some steamed broccoli.

Oats can be eaten for breakfast or as a snack

From the moment you wake up, a bowl of oatmeal will help relieve cramps. If you eat them as oatmeal, in cookies, or in a nice bowl of homemade granola, oats are tasty and nutritious. They’re high in fibre, which makes you feel fuller for longer when you eat, and they’re also high in zinc and magnesium.

Take some ginger with you

Ginger, in some way, can help with nausea relief. When you’re feeling nauseous, ginger will help soothe your stomach. It can also help with bloating and gas.

Chamomile tea can help to relieve cramps

Chamomile tea is a delicious, caffeine-free beverage that aids in the relief of muscle spasms. It will also help you relax.
