Lupita Nyong’o gets ambassadorial deal with De Beers
Star actress, Lupita Nyong’o, has accepted an ambassadorial position with De Beers Group, a mines company based in the United States.
Lupita’s primary role in the partnership, according to the mining company, will be to support De Beers’ Building Forever commitment, which aims to advance women and girls in areas where diamonds are discovered.
De Beers is said to be one of the world’s largest diamond mining companies, with a diamond output of 30.78 million carats in 2019.
The campaign and new role are the company’s first, and they celebrate De Beers’ unique passion for sourcing nature’s rarest treasures and revealing their exceptional beauty through remarkable artisanship.
The mining company will collaborate with Lupita Nyong’o to achieve the brand’s public goal of engaging 10,000 girls in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics through its Building Forever approach (STEM).
To achieve these goals by 2030, the firm will also support 10,000 female entrepreneurs and invest at least $10 million across Southern Africa.
Lupita expressed her gratitude to De Beers for the honour and partnership, saying it allowed her to expand her advocacy to women and girls all over the world.
I’m honored to be the first-ever Global Ambassador for De Beers. Our new campaign brings to life the transformative power you can feel when wearing diamonds, sourced responsibly, knowing they are creating a lasting positive impact for the people and places the jewelry comes from. Even more importantly, my partnership with De Beers allows me to extend my advocacy for women and girls around the world
Lupita’s new role, on the other hand, has received criticism from a number of netizens who believe she should not have accepted the role.
They accused the company of taking advantage of residents in the countries where the diamonds are mined.
The company primarily investigates diamond mining in four countries around the world, three of which are in Africa: South Africa, Botswana, and Namibia. The company also has operations in Canada.
De Beers, on the other hand, claims that their diamond work provides enormous economic and social benefits to the countries in which they operate, and that they work closely with local governments and communities, supporting their industries and delivering the benefits of our diamonds to the people and places where they are discovered.
