Trauma drove me to alcohol experimentation – model Cara Delevingne
Popular British actress and model, Cara Delevingne, has spoken up about how her traumatic childhood led her to experiment with drugs and alcohol at a young age before she was capable of discontinuing use.
The actress revealed this in a Vogue cover article. Delevingne, who experienced a highly public fall from grace in 2022, said that her trauma stems from having to care for her bipolar and heroin-dependent mother for most of her life.
She admitted that she first started abusing alcohol when she was 7 years old, during a family wedding.
In her words;
“I woke up in my granny’s house in my bedroom with a hangover, in a bridesmaid’s dress.
“I’d gone around nailing glasses of Champagne.”
The actress stated that when she was 10 years old, she had already started taking sleeping drugs to treat her sleeplessness.
According to the Dyspraxia Foundation, she was also identified as having dyspraxia, a neurological condition of the brain that causes lifelong impairments in one’s motor, memory, judgment, processing, and other cognitive abilities.
She stated; “This was the beginning of mental health issues and inadvertent self-harm.
“Instead of taking the time to really learn something new or do something new, I got very wrapped up in misery, wallowing and partying. It was a really sad time.”
Delevingne acknowledged that she would intentionally hurt herself by trying to knock herself unconscious by beating her head against a tree. Doctors prescribed antipsychotic medicines for her because she would itch herself, but at her lowest moment, she considered suicide.
“Money is not everything. You get to the point where you are like, ‘Oh, I’ve made money’, but I’m so deeply unhappy and alone,” Cara added.
