Review of BlackPearl Couture’s Ankara Oge Collection: A Celebration of African Elegance
By Rita Okoye
Stepping into the private unveiling of the Ankara Oge Collection by BlackPearl Couture on the 10th of October 2023, I was instantly enveloped in an atmosphere of cultural elegance and refined sophistication.
The event was held in an intimate Lagos venue, transformed into a sanctuary of artistic expression and African heritage.
Dimmed golden lighting cast soft shadows across the room, illuminating the intricately designed Ankara-themed decor that paid homage to traditional textile craftsmanship. The air carried the subtle hum of live traditional Yoruba percussion mixed with contemporary Afrobeats, creating a rhythm that set the perfect tone for an evening of artistic brilliance.

At the heart of this spectacle was Omolola Ayomide Fayomi, the visionary creative director and fashion designer behind BlackPearl Couture, who has consistently pushed the boundaries of African fashion while remaining deeply rooted in tradition.
With this collection, she did more than present clothing. She narrated a story of heritage, evolution, and the seamless fusion of modernity with classic African aesthetics. The audience was introduced to a stunning display of meticulously crafted garments that celebrated the essence of Ankara in ways both bold and refreshingly new.
The first ensemble that captured my attention featured a billowing black skirt with cascading ruffles, paired with a statement monochrome print blouse with voluminous bishop sleeves.
The contrast between the dramatic layered movement of the skirt and the structured high-fashion appeal of the blouse was a masterclass in proportion and elegance. The print, a mesmerizing mix of abstract and organic forms, spoke to Ankara’s deep storytelling nature, while the cinched waist added a contemporary almost couture-like edge.

Then came the fluid cream-toned shift dress adorned with Ankara ruffle detailing at the hem. This piece was an effortless embodiment of sophistication, blending a minimalist silhouette with intricate African craftsmanship.
The carefully placed Ankara accents added dimension to the flowing fabric, proving that elegance does not always require excess. It simply demands intention. However, the standout look of the evening was the asymmetrical corset dress, where a structured Ankara bodice met a flowing white handkerchief-hem skirt in a seamless dance of structure and fluidity.
The intricately boned corset emphasized the waist, while the asymmetry of the cascading hem created a striking visual balance. It was a dress that exuded power and femininity in equal measure.
Modern yet deeply tied to its African roots. Each design reflected Fayomi’s meticulous approach to detail, her reverence for African fabric traditions, and her ability to infuse a distinctly modern sensibility into every thread and fold.
Her ability to reimagine Ankara beyond the conventional while still preserving its rich heritage is what sets BlackPearl Couture apart. The audience responded with reverent admiration, murmurs of appreciation filling the room as each new look was revealed. It was not just a collection.

It was a movement, a reaffirmation of Ankara’s place in global high fashion. As the final walk commenced, it became clear that this collection was more than just a showcase of clothing. It was a statement on cultural pride, identity, and the endless versatility of African fashion. Omolola Ayomide Fayomi had once again proven that Ankara is not confined to tradition but is instead a living evolving art form capable of gracing the highest realms of fashion.
BlackPearl Couture’s Ankara Oge Collection was a triumph, a reminder that true artistry lies in honouring the past while fearlessly stepping into the future.
