FASHION REVIEW; STYLE THAT SPEAKS VOLUMES

There is this soft power that comes with walking into a room and letting your style do the talking. In its 2024 collection, Kozi captures that power, one that elevates the individual into a person of confidence, culture, and creative edge.

Kozi is a vibrant luxury fashion house birthed by the trailblazing founder, Lovely Nyoreme Obodozie.

Her passion for creating affordable pieces challenges the norms while still offering elegant and high-end fashion to those who appreciate colourful and innovative designs. With the drive to uphold this commitment, Lovely pushes the brand to evolve and innovate constantly.

The use of bold and vibrant hues in making each piece has always been the soul of the brand. Lovely believes colour is more than a design element- it is a sure way of transforming the ordinary into extraordinary. Not just this, with the fusion of art and African fashion, the brand offers its wearer true high designs that unleash their inner beauty. Who says African fashion can’t be colourful, extravagant, and luxurious? The 2024 collection offers women something deeper – a transformation inherently woven into a fabric.

Kozi’s 2024 collection is more than just clothing: it is a means of transforming individual, communicating their belief, and inspiring the world. Here is your invitation to join a community that uses colours to make bold and unapologetical statements.

Choose to wear pieces that reflect the balance of traditional hues with contemporary styles. Let’s dive into the world of Kozi.  The first piece -a blush pink ensemble- is anything but quiet.

At first glance, the gown draws you in with its hue: a delicate light pink. The choice of colour is bold; it suggests both innocence and feminine power.

Yet, it is the structure that wows us. Rather than yielding to the conventional design of a gown’s structure, it challenges it. The upper’s bodice is striking with its armless cut and zigzag neckline.

While the top style exudes confidence, the angular neckline might limit its appeal to select silhouettes. The designer could consider a softer variation without killing the overall feel of the piece. The top, with its folded layers, flares dramatically at the waist. There is playfulness, but it’s meticulous. Though the texture and volume of the design risk overwhelming the midsection, depending on the fabric weight, the designer’s attention to detailed cut and tailoring is highly commendable.

This speaks so well of Kozi’s design team.Below, the gown, also flared and layered, flows dramatically to the knee. The freedom of the skirt complements the structured look of the top, though the contrast between the two forms – rigid upper, fluid lower – feels slightly abrupt. But it is the hemline that delivers the final note – a finish that is both solid and romantic. With its folded layers, it draws onlookers’ eyes downward, leaving a lasting impression.

The piece is a breath of fresh air. It commands attention. It challenges traditional femininity with its zigzag cut, clean tailoring, and fluttering hem.  From the back view, the top has a zip line that runs from the shoulder level to a point below the hip level. This adds to the overall fitness of the top. The unique design of the top and bottom is very visible from this angle.

It flares slightly, offering a fuller look to the piece. The skirt offers grace but lacks the intrigue and edge of the front view. From this view, the rear volume is slightly more pronounced, which can either flatter the figure or risk overwhelming it.

However, the piece’s unique design and dramatic feel would only be suitable for fashion runway shows and exclusive entertainment shows. It wouldn’t be frowned on at a religious or corporate meeting. If you are looking to start a conversation, then this is for you. Kozi doesn’t just design garments. They tell stories. And this right here is one of a woman unafraid to be both delicate and defined.

The piece is a celebration of colour and form, unveiling the true essence of Kozi’s brand. The two-piece ensemble, which features a lilac-patterned top and a deeper purple skirt, gracefully blends structure with softness. The top and skirt combination complement each other in tone and texture while making a loud statement individually. But the top is arguably the more fanciful of the pair. Now, let’s talk about the top.

Crafted from a material with a lilac background, the soft purple motifs bring life to the surface. However, while this is charming, the floral pattern could benefit from a more defined arrangement. The designer could consider a slightly bolder contrast or another patterned fabric, with a print more visually compelling from a distance.

The neckline, a rounded collar, with its modest slit at the centre, adds just the perfect touch of curiosity. It looks conservative at first glance, but on a second look, it has an underlying charm. The sleeves, long and airy, flare out at the ends, giving the top a sense of movement.

This element is particularly commendable, as it adds volume without feeling too much. The cropped length of the top reveals the banded structure of the skirt while cleverly balancing modest coverage with modern style. The choice of making it sit just above the waist gives the design a youthful edge.

As usual, Kozi knows how to stun its wearer with the right combination of colours. In contrast to the top, the accompanying skirt, with a deeper purple tone, blends the look with maturity. The waistband is neatly banded and performs the necessary function – to offer the first structure and fitness at the top.

The standout feature of the piece lies at the base of the skirt, where the hem is held together with fabrics from the top, allowing the motif to reappear and echo the upper half. This touch of continuity is thoughtful and visually appealing to the eye.

From this vantage angle, the piece is properly tailored and holds the wearer’s body in a flattering way. With the extra zipper for both the top and skirt, the piece offers more comfort, allowing it to be adaptable to different body types.

Still, there’s room for refinement. Unlike the front view, where the neckline has a slit, the back remains too flat; maybe the designer was too cautious.

Maybe a keyhole cut, a back button detail, or even a drape might have made the back more intriguing. Again, the attached material to the hem of the skirt, while creative, may not cater to women who prefer clothes of shorter length.

However, working on this alternative should not alter the core elements of the fit’s designs. However, what the ensemble does particularly well is balance. The colours are well-chosen, with the lilac top lending brightness to the deeper shade of purple used for the skirt.

Together, they make it ideal for events like early evening gatherings or occasions that call for understated charm. This stunning piece from Kozi’s 2024 collection features a brown chocolate gown. One word that can describe the art behind this design would be ‘sophistication’.

The vibrant hues add to the overall sophistication exuding from the gown. This speaks highly of what the brand stands for: colour as a means of transforming the ordinary into something extraordinary. The gown has a unique neckline that stretches lower, midway to the chest.

Though of a different shade of brown, a design is attached to the dress, giving it a powerful play of colour combinations. The sleeve rests comfortably on the wearer’s shoulder; however, it can be improved for the wearability of women with larger body frames. Now, to the lower part of the gown.

They complete the piece beautifully in how they flow down to the knees. The design hugs the body in all the right places while still offering access to movement. The attention to detail and the bold, well-balanced colour choices are the standout features of the piece.

The design is stylish but still practical for everyday wear. With the right pairing, the dress would transform from a daytime event to an evening hangout with your girls.   This piece is meant for the confident, stylish women who love to stand out without trying too much. It is fresh and unique.

However, the chosen colour leaves a question of wearability – it is neither versatile nor flattering, especially for women with lighter complexions. Offering bolder, more wearable hues should have been a given, not an afterthought.

With the creative Lovely Nyoreme Obodozie steering the helm of affairs, the brand has once again delivered a masterpiece. The 2024 collection, with its bold, vibrant print and attention to detailed cuts, makes it a must-have for all women. Now, which piece are you picking off the rack?
