Essential Safety Tips For your Next Boat Trip

In the wake of the tragic death of popular Nollywood actor Junior Pope Odonwodo, on a boat trip along the River Niger, it is crucial to remind everyone of the importance of safety while traveling on water.

A boat trip can be an enjoyable way to spend time with family and friends, but it can also turn dangerous if proper precautions are not taken.
Here are some essential safety tips to keep in mind before embarking on your next boat trip.

  1. Check the Weather
First, always check the weather before heading out on a boat trip. If the forecast is an unpleasant one, postpone your trip to a much better and brighter day.
  2. Check boat condition
Ensure the boat is in good working condition and has all required safety equipment on board, such as a fire extinguisher, flares, a first-aid kit, and a VHF radio.
  3. Wear a Life Jacket
When the above is settled, ensure you wear a properly fitting life jacket while on a boat, regardless of how well you can swim. This simple step can save your life in case of an emergency.
  4. Dress appropriately
Ensure you dress appropriately for the weather and water conditions.
  5. Have a Float Plan
Let someone know where you are going, how long you plan to be gone, and the names and contact information of everyone on board.
  6. Keep a Lookout
Alongside the boat operator, also keep a lookout for other boats, swimmers, debris, and changing weather conditions, and alert the operator if the need arises.
  7. Don’t enter an Overloaded Boat
Make sure your boat is not overloaded with passengers or equipment. Overloading can cause the boat to become unstable and capsize.
