AJIBOLA OPEYEMI OLUSOGA: THE DESIGNER SHAPING A NEW GENERATION OF FASHION TALENT

In an industry often driven by aesthetics, trends and the relentless pace of production, very few designers commit themselves to the equally demanding task of raising the next generation.

But Ajibola Opeyemi Olusoga, Creative Director of the Lagos-based fashion label JIBBS, has quietly become one of the most influential mentors within Nigeria’s contemporary fashion landscape.

Since 2021, Olusoga has led an intensive Emerging Designers Programme, a training initiative that has already equipped more than 40 early-career designers with the practical skills required to navigate today’s competitive fashion market. Her teaching extends far beyond sketching or inspiration boards; she focuses on the often-neglected pillars of professional practice collection development, technical rigour, construction standards, and brand positioning.

“Talent is plentiful,” Olusoga explains, “but what’s missing is structure. Creativity must be supported by discipline and a clear understanding of how the industry works.”
Her modules reflect this belief. Designers undergo a guided process covering range planning, fabrication logic, fit analysis, finishing standards, and sustainable production models. In an era where sustainability is no longer optional, Olusoga’s emphasis on waste-reducing systems and efficient production techniques is particularly timely.

Participants also receive portfolio reviews and collection critiques, an area where Olusoga’s eye for detail sets an uncompromising standard. Many emerging designers credit her guidance for helping them refine their silhouettes, strengthen their storytelling, and reach the level of polish required for retail-facing presentations.

Industry observers have noted that Olusoga’s contribution comes at a crucial moment. As Lagos continues to assert itself as a global fashion capital, the need for well-trained, professionally prepared designers is higher than ever. Her programme not only strengthens individual talent but contributes to the long-term sustainability of Nigeria’s fashion ecosystem.

While JIBBS continues to establish itself through impeccable pattern cutting, clean construction and refined storytelling, Olusoga’s parallel commitment to mentorship reveals the deeper philosophy behind her practice: fashion is not just about creating garments—it is about building capacity, community, and a future where excellence is the baseline, not the exception.

With her dual impact as a designer and educator, Ajibola Opeyemi Olusoga stands out as one of the pivotal forces shaping the next chapter of African fashion. Her work proves that leadership is not only measured by runway success, but by the designers who rise because she chose to teach.
